hallo,

unidentified bird of prey found run over in Bulgaria. it is a lovely creature. does anyone know what it is? there are quite a number of them around.
area is gently undulating farmland with wide open fields separated by lines of trees that act as windbreaks

It's an adult female Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus. The grey bars on pale wings and fine grey bars on the pale off-white body are characteristic. And, yes, they are lovely. Unfortunately they sometimes concentrate so hard on catching their prey (small birds) that they crash into windows or vehicles.
 
thank you everybody - cant see them in summer when hidden by leaves but now no leaves na,na,na,na,na - have taken to setting off 10 mins early with binoculars ......
