Hi,

I'm going to Switzerland next month and will stay near Neuchatel. Could you please give some information about nice places to watch birds.

Thanks
Joaquim

Hi Joaquim

Around Neuchâtel you can find a lot of lovely places to watch birds. Best of all is the Fanel/Chablais de Cudrefin. It's also at Lake Neuchâtel, but on the opposite side. There is a Nature center with hides, you can walk out along the river to the lake to see waders, terns, ducks and in the riverine forests orioles and nightingales are singing. Check the website about the center (german or french). You can also reach the place by boat from Neuchâtel.
The forest around the Chasseral (a mountain range near Neuchatel) is also very good for birding. Hazelhen, Capercaille, a good range of owls, woodpeckers, pipits, citril finch and even wallcreeper are breeding here. Best you walk from Villeret (reached by train, go from Neuchâtel to La Chaux-de-Fonds and from there to Villeret with the train to Biel/Bienne) to the Combe Grède, from there up to the Chasseral and down through the forest to Nods. There you can take the train down to the Lake of Bienne and there the train back to Neuchatel. You will need a day to cover the area.
Around Neuchâtel you will find a lot of vineyards with Cirl Bunting, sometimes Wryneck and other species.

Good birding in Switzerland
