Birding on the uists/harris/lewis (1 Viewer)

Hi Steve

Have a look at the Opus articles here - they'll give you a start. I'm sure there'll be others along soon with some more info for you.

Do you know which islands you're planning to visit yet?

D

hi delia
thanks for replying, i intend to stay on north uist traveling to south uist and harris/lewis for day trips. ive already booked the holiday and have a rough idea where to go for birds, but as you know theres always hiding treasures out there which others know about.

Hi Steve have looked at the Opus site, very good. We were Western sles last year. Just wondering if you could answer me, on the opus site there is in the information Permit is Required to enter the reserve, Do you know what reserve this is. Didn,t see any notices for permits last year. We are go again this year. Great birding all over.

Hi Seamor

Agree that's a bit confusing and looks like a slight edit is required.

It's the reserve at Loch Druidibeag that requires the permit (at least it did when the original article was written - if anyone knows differently can you let us know).

BTW You'll find lots of useful information and links in this thread.

Unfortunately I was unable to do a trip report - but it was wonderful.

Hi Steve, When we were at Loch Druidibag last year second and third week in May, the gate was open and we just drove through the reserve, there were several other cars doing the same

We stayed a few nights here (it was too windy for tents :eek!:)

Absolutely loved it.

Berneray is a beautiful island, try and fit it in if you can.

The causeway just east of Stornoway airport is great for Divers.
Loidse Ghriaise, north of Stornoway for Skuas.
Stornoway harbour for gulls.
Port Nis near Butt of Lewis for White Billed Diver.
Butt of Lewis great for seabirds and migrants.
Anywhere on Harris for Golden and White Tailed Eagles.
Luskentyre for Black Guillemot.
Sielebost for stunning scenery.
Ferry to North Uist for Divers, Long Tailed Duck.
The old quarry in front of the junction of the B893 (from the ferry)and A865 for Eagles.
Commerce road for Hen Harrier, Eagles, Merlin, Short Eared owl
Road from Clachn a Luib to Lochmaddy for divers
Grenitote for Snowy Owl
Balranald for Twite, Corn Bunting, Corncrake and seawatching for Skuas
Clachan a Luib for waders
Small Lochans near Turlum for Phalarope
Stinky Bay for waders
Benbecula rubbish dump for Peregrine, Ravens, Gulls
Lochs behind Ruabhal for divers, and Short Eared Owl
Peters Port for divers
Causeway between Creagorry and Ardmore for waders
Military range for Merlin
Rubha Aird a Muile for seawatching
Plantaion on the way to Loch Sgioport for warblers.
Causeway to Eriskay for Otters

Now you are asking yourselves how a man living in Extremadura knows a few places on the Western Isles. Well, my sister has lived there for donkeys years, and i also came within a whisker of buying a place there too, so ive been there rather more than a few times.
