AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6E ED VR (1 Viewer)

Here are some more shots. We had an awesome afternoon and sunset today. Luckely I had some company in form of some bearded tits (lol). All handheld standing on the fence to reach over the reed.

WOW i am speechless, will place an order soon, and i might get the D7200 from our local dealer he got an offer on it, but i wonder why they never do that.

I haven't noticed that behaviour so I won't bother. They can update it when I send my camera and lens in for calibration and cleaning in the future some time :)

Disappointing thread on dpreview in nikon lens forum on how this lens performs with birds in flight.

pretty quick drawn conclusions from ONE user report?

but AF at f5.6 will of course not be any better than with a f4.0 lens,
thats the reality, and the performance of the camera's AF-system will be more important,

I haven't experienced anything like what he describes. I shoot D7200 and the 200-500 is better than both the tamron and sigma sport for me.

I use af-c all the time with back button focusing. I take BIF and stationary shots and leave the stabilizer on normal mode. I don't even bother limiting the focus range because it just works.

I agree, AF seems very reliable on my D7200. Also I cannot replicate the AF issue related to the recall for the firmware update even though mine is one of the first lenses released.

Question,

Will it perform good too on older body like D300s? Or much better with full frame?

I have used the D300s with different f4 lenses + TC14 at f5.6, the AF will be noticeable slower in low light at f5.6,
in good light it was less of a problem, but the difference is there,

AF speed is also depending on processor capacity in the camera,
(and maybe battery capacity??)
D300s was a pro grade body,
but I suspect that the more recent D7200 will perform better than the D300s,

the D300s have AF sensitivity down to -1 EV,
the D7200 down to -3 EV (2 stops better in low light)

If the D300s + 200-500/5.6 will be fast enough at AF for you is difficult to say,
we all use gear differently and have different preferences, and expectations.

Thank to your experiences I've been convinced to the D7200 and the 200-500/5.6 today. I did test the lens on the D750 too but as I already have a full frame Nikon I went for the DX crop camera. I have the D7000 and have been very happy with it over the years.
I'll hopefully get out in the field with it tomorrow.
Neil.

Here are a few birds from my quick test this morning before the tourists turned up in the harbour. First impressions is that you can Hand Hold but not for too long. The image stabilising seems good but AF a tad slower than the 300/4PF which I would expect. Image quality looks ok and similar to D810 and 300/4PF.
Having the zoom range is great for birds, especially if you are restricted to a fixed position.

Nice! I hope you are happy with your decision. I am very happy with the d7200 and 200-500 combo still! Although I haven't got to use it as much as I would like due to the lack of birds in autumn.

Another advantage of the 200-500/5.6 lens is that it brings activities out on the Hong Kong harbour much closer.
On my way to Lamma Island on the ferry I can shoot all the different boats I see. And one Magpie Robin. The image stabilising seems to work very well.
