Hi, birders.
I mentioned in a reply to Dianne that i'd post the birds i saw on my recent trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I was there September 21-28 in Corolla, which is in the northern part.
The list is for the whole trip, but almost every bird was seen there on the Outer Banks. I was thrilled by the warblers, because i was able to watch them for as long as i wanted and they were VERY close. The * will denote a lifer for me.
Beach/water's-edge types:
Pied-billed Grebe
Mallard (I was so surprised not to see more ducks!)
Canada Goose
Great Blue Heron
Green Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
* Amer. Avocet
* Wilson's Plover
* Marbled Godwit
Yellowlegs, probably Greater
Killdeer
Sanderling
Belted Kingfisher
Double-crested Cormorant
Brown Pelican
Great Black-backed Gull
Ring-billed Gull
Herring Gull
Laughing Gull
Royal Tern
* Sandwich Tern
* Common Tern
Birds in the general neighborhood:
* Carolina Chickadee
Mockingbird
Boat-tailed Grackle
Common Grackle
Blue Jay
Cardinal
Song Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Starling
Chimney Swift
Tree Swallow
Red-bellied Woodpecker (heard only)
Downy Woodpecker
House Sparrow (Aren't they just everywhere??)
Amer. Robin
Amer. Crow (no Fish Crows!)
Carolina Wren (heard only)
Marsh Wren (Had great looks when it landed on the marsh
boardwalk to check me out!)
The big guys:
Osprey
Red-tailed Hawk
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
The little guys:
Northern Parula
* Yellow-throated Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Amer. Redstart
Black-and-White Warbler
Red-eyed Vireo
So, if i count the Rock Doves, that makes a trip total of 52.
Two "got away" -- a dark plain warbler i only saw for a fly-by (maybe an Orange-crowned???) and a small dull-yellow-bellied bird too far away in the scubby bushes of the dunes.
Happy birding!
Sylvia
