land snails question

A few days ago I photographed these land snails

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/431/1...dd541a5b_o.jpg

I do not recall seeing land snails atop of another snail?

Could somebody please tell me what these young snails are doing atop of an adult one?

Thank you.

When conditions are dry, snails will try to seal their shells to prevent water loss. If there are no suitably shaped stones, then they will seal to other shells.

Thank you! The conditions are more than dry in California now.
