After some frustration at being given the run around by Franklin’s gull over recent weeks, missing it by an hour on one occasion and it being present at times when I couldn’t go and disappearing at times when I could, I had decided to head up to the area for roseate terns this weekend and hope to cross paths with it or that it may be refound.

Instead, news of Buff breasted sandpiper at Blacktoft meant a different route and an alternative way to get my 300th Yorkshire bird (at least as long as lesser and common redpoll are not lumped).

Blacktoft sands

Lots of waders on offer here including the aforementioned sandpiper.

591. (216) Buff breasted sandpiper (1st Yorkshire)

With 2 others in the car, petrol costs were not unreasonable so decided after this early success to revert to the original plan.

South Gare

592. (217.) Roseate tern

Took a lot longer than hoped for to finally get one amongst the common, sandwich and 1 little terns and a few more waders to complete an impressive number of charadriformes seen today.

I see that the Franklin’s gull continued to taunt during the week before disappearing for the weekend. Had rather more luck doing some sea watching at Flamborough.

593. (218.) Arctic skua
594. (219.) Great skua
595. (220.) Balearic shearwater

Along with the currently resident pied crow - not sure what to do with that one on the list.

Out on the Wirral today, managed 2 out of 3 targets, the spotted crake proving to be too elusive.

Hilbre Island

596. (221.) Bonaparte's gull

Burton mere

---. (222.) Cattle egret

One of those weeks, only just getting around to updating from last Sunday at Spurn.

601. (227.) Common rosefinch

The only addition, although retrospectively rather amusing to watch everyone trying to string a pheasant into a corncrake, it was a bit annoying at the time, twice leaving the rosefinch area on dodgy news.

Probably also able to stick my previously undisclosed Marsh warbler on the list with breeding season now over.

602. (228.) Marsh warbler (1st Yorkshire)

603. (229.) Grey phalarope

Nice displays from hen harrier and Merlin at parkgate on the Wirral but the pallid harrier appears to have moved on.

Long drive today to see the Beluga down in Kent. Much further than I’d normally twitch but it seemed a fairly safe bet and with 3 in the car, costs were acceptable.

The beluga spent all the time I was there closer to the other bank but was pretty active allowing numerous scoped views as it came up for air.

A couple of nice year ticks on the way back north too.

Near Royston

604. (230.) Pallid harrier - very showy, even perching up but with an injured right leg.

Longstanton

605. (231.) Pectoral sandpiper

Speculating on the weather for a day at spurn today, dipping an American golden plover in Lincs along the way.

Spurn

238. (232.) Rose coloured starling - third attempt at this species this year and connected easily. Index number has been adjusted due to an earlier error from Cameroon.
606. (233.) Jacksnipe
607. (234.) Barred warbler
608. (235.) Snow bunting

Now having passed my previous best world year.

Disgusted with the weather yesterday on the way back south. Tried for the black scoter in impossible conditions with 40mph gusts and sand blasting half my face.

I managed a consolation black grouse at arkengarthdale this afternoon at least.

609. (237.) Black grouse

Infuriating weather once again, made a second attempt for the black duck in Northumberland today. Several people claiming to have the bird, even looking through someone's scope at the alleged bird only to see empty water - the bird presumably dived and could not be relocated.

A couple of brief views of what may have been the bird in between squalls of rain, then in the afternoon when the weather calmed down, absolutely nothing.

610. (238.) Red throated diver

On a roll of bad luck, a big Friday clear out at Spurn and able to manage only:

611. (239.) Hooded crow
612. (240.) Shorelark

Some appalling photographers getting too close to these birds instead of respecting their space.

Well, the weekend began with more disappointment as the Pied wheatear had gone by Saturday and Sunday began in a similar vein.

Headed into County Durham to find a herd of joggers may have had something to do with the no show dusky warbler. A ridiculously late firework display may have been responsible for the no show hoopoe. Then a nailed on short eared owl site failed to produce one.

Arriving at Seaton Carew 10 minutes after the last sighting of pallid swift and its failure to reappear had me questioning why I put myself through this.

The answer to that question came soon enough though when news broke that the swift was now at the headland and before too long I was watching said bird down to a few meters along with its companion, the little swift.

With the turn in fortune and a little time available Short eared owl finally did make the year list back down at Seaton Carew Common.

Hartlepool headland

613. (241.) Pallid swift - 1st UK
---. (242.) Little swift

Seaton Carew

614. (243.) Short eared owl

Leighton moss

A very nice day. As well as the target year birds, 5 species of heron around the reserve. Grey heron, Bittern, Great white egret, Little egret, Cattle egret

615. (244.) American wigeon
616. (245.) Great grey shrike

Ainsdale

617. (246.) Dusky warbler

Extremely difficult to find the location but once there, the bird showed very well.

Couple of weeks off birding so nice to get out in the fresh air this Sunday.

Filey

619. (248.) Great northern diver

Hornsea

---. (249.) Scaup

Feel like I need to make the effort and get a nice round 250 for the UK before the year's out. Iceland gull or black redstart still outstanding, let's see.

Did well at escaping the wretched weather this Sunday, heading north with two targets to tip me over the 250 mark.

Tynemouth

620. (250.) Black redstart

Richard's pipit was a no show but no rain all day and a flock of around 25 waxwings was a nice bonus.
