Perhaps I am missing something (which happens pretty often) but they just look like male (left) and female (right) Slate-colored Juncos to me.
 
It was an ID of wisdom, it was an ID of foolishness...

Agree with male & female (or possibly immature) slaties. The females (& young) are rather variable, but it's not surprising if you haven't seen one quite this brownish before.

Well I learned two things,
1. Y’all are astute Dickensian punsters.
2. I have a crappy bird book.

that female looked dramatically different (as depicted in the photos) and my book didn’t delve into such variations, and so I came here ....
so, my bad, still- I’m very appreciative of the input here on birdforum!

No, you don't have a crappy bird book. In terms of showing all the variation in juncos, most of them don't do a good job.

But I appreciate your great expectations that it was something unusual.
