Hi,

Your identifications are correct. Juvenile tree swallows are all brown. Males then acquire their iridescent green coloration. First-year females may acquire some green coloration, or may remain all brown. Eventually, all females acquire varying amounts of iridescent green coloration, but usually not as much as males. Their coloration does not vary with the seasons so far as I know.

Best,
Jim

Thanks for that...but what do you think it is - the one peeping out of the box.?

It's a female or young bird, as you suggested. I'd guess female since I'd expect a juvenile of that age to have left the nest, but not sure.

Best,
Jim
