Howdy! Can you help our classroom out? (1 Viewer)

It is freezing at my school in Texas today, and my kiddos and I rescued this cute little bird that was freezing to death outside. He was so cold that he let me scoop him up with my hands. Can you tell us what he is?

PS
They eat suet( unsalted only) or small insects.
Mealworms are good, if there is a pet supply store nearby.
If you keep the bird overnight, a dark box with some water is good.

Do note that they may be covered by Federal Law, so it is wise to let him go once the bird has recovered.

Great to know! Thank you so much for the information. We will probably let him go when it's warm. For now, his name is Nugget, and he is our temporary classroom mascot!

Hola Frogpond2011!

A warm welcome to Birdforum from all the staff at Birdforum. :t:

Hi Frogpond2011,

Looking up the diet of your guest, it seems they will eat seeds (crushed pecans or something similarly rich) and fruit during the winter season. So you can save the mealworms for now, although raising them would make a great project for the kids and give you food to attract Bluebirds this spring.
The breeding range of the bird is set partly by the winters, surviving snow storms when you weight in at a quarter ounce is very difficult.
Do note that this is a wild bird, it will not take well to confinement the moment it is six inches away from death's door.
If you can help it have another chance, you and your kids will have done well..

Happy news. You guys and gals deserve an A+.

Any more color on what if anything he ate or drank while with you?

He ate mealworms and perched on the edge of the fish tank for a sip of water. The temp is headed down to the 20s today, so maybe we'll see Nugget again.

Outstanding! Your class did great.
Looks like Nugget has a safe harbor in bad weather.
That's good, because Ruby Crowned Kinglets are a declining species, especially in the western US.
Unfortunately, we do not know why.
