This is a trip report on our trip to southern Tamaulipas, Mexico. Birds with asterisks were life birds.
Our bird guide was Ricardo at the Hostal Casa de Piedra. All nights in Gomez Farias were spent in the Hostal Casa de Piedra; in Tampico in the Hotel Posada del Rey.
March 11: Flew into Tampico.
March 12: Traveled from Tampico to Gomez Farias. Only a few species.
Bird Highlights: Canivet's Emerald (at feeders at hotel).
March 13: Hiked from Gomez Farias to Alta Cima. A steep road with a surface of sharp rocks, this climb is painful but provides many birds. 80 Species!
Bird Highlights: White-winged Tanager*, Crimson-collared Grosbeak* (a NE Mexico endemic), Fan-tailed Warbler*, Hooded Grosbeak*, Rufous-browed Peppershrike*, Thicket Tinamou*, Singing Quail*, Wedge-tailed Sabrewing*, Elegant Trogon, Mountain Trogon, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Squirrel Cuckoo.
March 14: Drove to the Rio Frio, then hiked around. At night, spotted a Northern Potoo on the hotel grounds.
Bird Highlights: Military Macaw*, Northern Potoo*, Scrub and Yellow-throated Euphonias, many Green Kingfishers, nesting White-crowned Parrot, Common Black-Hawk, Squirrel Cuckoo.
March 15: Walked along the road to Azteca.
Bird Highlights: Crested Guan*, Ornate Hawk-Eagle*, Gray-collared Becard*, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.
Other Wildlife Highlights: Common Morpho butterfly.
March 16: Went to Valle del OVNI (translates as UFO Valley).
Bird Highlights: SOLITARY EAGLE*, Common Black-Hawk, Squirrel Cuckoo.
Other Wildlife Highlights: Coral snake.
March 17: Returned to Tampico.
March 18: Explored Tampico.
Other Wildlife Highlights: Morelet's Crocodile.
March 19: Returned to USA.
