Colour-marked moths (1 Viewer)

On Monday night (20/7) I trapped a very peculiar looking Dark Arches with one wing painted green! I can’t see how this could have happened accidentally so presumably someone is marking moths and hoping to hear of re-captures? If so I’d be interested to hear from them. I’ve already contacted the VC31 recorder who is unaware of anything happening locally so I’m intrigued to find out where this moth came from.

Hi David

Over the years I've seen similar photos from a range of moths. The eventual 'answer' was that this was probably a natural leakage of fluid when the moth was inflating its wings, staining the wing green (or slightly bluiish).

If I can, I'll see if I kept a note of it.

Best wishes

Martin

Good grief, I'd never have thought of that but I did think that whoever was marking the moths was being a bit heavy-handed with the paint! Thanks, Martin, I'd be interested if you turn anything up.

Hi David
An alternative explanation is that the Dark Arches was quietly roosting on a shed or fence when it was disturb by a large brush loaded with Ronseal One Coat in Forest Green (other makes are available)! |;|
Best regards, Rob

I have tried marking larger moth in the past with just the tiniest spot of liquid paper, never had a re-catch.
