But indeed (I assume his Ph. D. thesis) Vergleichend-morphologische Studien zur Systematik und Klassifikation der Myrmelioniden (Insecta, Neuroptera) indicates an entomologist. In there we can read here:

Ich, Walter Otto Markl, wurde am 8. Dezember 1926 als drittes Kind des Otto und der Erna Markl-Prechter in Luzern geboren, wo mein Vater als Braumeister tätig ist. In meiner Vater- und Heimatstadt besuchte ich sechs Klassen der Primarschule und anschliessend die kantonale Mittelstufe.
