For anyone interested in Swans, I got an e-mail from the Monticello, Minnesota, Chamber of Commerce. There are currently about 700 Trumpeter Swans on the river in downtown Monticello. In tha pst there have been as many as 1500.
Trumpeter Swans were re-introduced to Minnesota severl years ago, and many of the Swans from Canada, Wisconsin and Minnesota now winter on the river, which stays opne to the hot water discharge from the power plant in Monticello. The "Swan Lady" began feeding them corn in the 90's, and now they stay around from late October / early November until late February / early March (until the lakes open up).
You can view, and photograph, the Trumpeter Swans, and American coots, mallards and Canada Geese, as close as 30 yards away. We are running a tour up there next weekend.
