Andy's field sketches (1 Viewer)

More from garden today. these and the sparrows were all sketched
from the garden using bino's only and the naked eye. I've
lent my scope to a mate at the mo . was a good excersize. I am
trying to do a little sketching every day at the moment.
The garden this morning was lovely crisp and clear .All you could
hear were jackdaws in the distance and the rythmic tick tick
of Robins . One male robin sang from the edge of the poplar's
behind our garden with his soft watery song. Not a bad start to the
day.

Lovely, lively stuff Andy. Totally agree about the spuggies, they are fab little birds and you've captured their character beautifully.

Now for some things that are completely different
Buzzard in flight from last year, and some Gull sketches
done from wembury beach whilst my kids and wife enjoyed
making sand castles the other week.

Last but not least, something from abroad a few years ago.
Sooty Falcon field studies , Bahrain. Dug these out to possibly do
a painting using these .

Utterly fabulous work Andrew - I love the passerines - miss these bits and bobs - maggies, great tits. .. - but what on earth are you doing lending your scope out??!!! -must be some mate!. Having said that- the excercise has worked extremely well - excellent.
The raptor drawings are, of course, sublime - look forward to the sooty painting with relish!

All stunning Andrew. Your sketches always look so clean and economical of line. out of interest, what pencils do you use?

Dave

Thanks guy's . Tim yes he's a good mate that had an accident with his
scope.(no fault of his own ) so I let him borrow mine.
Getting it back in a day or so. Will try and get the Sooty done soon.
still working on some morrocan paintings.

Dave I tend to use a stilleto pencil as a rule no need to keep sharpening
all the time. 0.5 lead hb mind you I'm a b****r for loosing them so carry
spares in the field.

Ditto, ditto, ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fieldwork of the very highest calibre Andy and so blo*ody consistent aren't you ... Aaaarh!

I am in total awe :D How can you and notable others on the forum do such fab work from life! I would guess that it's down to experience and a familiarity with the species gained from hours of looking and drawing. Am I right?
Any insight and tips for us novices out here?

Thanks for the comliments everyone, Wendy yes I supose it does come
down to experience , but more with the experience of drawing. I still have
to double check my work with field guides etc for accuracy with
plumage details and some times make silly mistakes on birds
not familiar to me and some that are as well!

Its not too crucial, as long as I try and capture some of the
spirit of the bird . For me I can correct things in studio for finnished
paintings such as mistakes in proportion and plumage details
that ar'nt quite right. This then free's you up in the field
to relax and be more confident with your sketches. This confidence
then grow's into better drawings.

These sketches are inspiring and motivating!
Having no time at the moment to be outside, I enjoy every day your discussions
and lifelike work!
Thank you for sharing them with us!!:clap::clap:

Thats really interesting - I go along with the concept of not worrying too much about detail and getting the spirit of the bird in the field. Being abit pedantic- I must have said something along these lines before- my major problem is that if something is still - ish I can have a good go at it but what I can't do is register an image and remember enough to record it. I think I'll look at an illustration for a minute or two and then draw what I remember- bit like a party game! Perhaps there's something wrong with those grey cells:brains::

Spizaetos . The Sooty sketch is down to you ! I was impressed with
your work and the Sooty you posted In the Gallery reminded
me of the Bahrain sketches.

Thanks for the compliments.

Taken me all night to read through all the threads I've missed but feel I must comment on this one, back to the Roller and Peregrine pics - absolutely superb Andrew, so much drama beautifullry captured, makes you want to know the outcome. Your field sketching is top class but your finished work is just so different I love it, thanks for posting.
