Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports (1 Viewer)

Let me take a bite at the OHB challenge.
1st - Adult male
2nd - Adult male
3rd - Dark morph adult female
4th -2cy male
5th - adult female.

I agree with Dev about 1 and 2. But I think 3,4 and 5 are juveniles (yellow base to the bill and fresh plumage). Number 3 is probably a male (few bands on tail) and 4 is probably a female due to multiple narrow bands on the wings and tail. Not sure about 5 (possibly female, too).

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Oct. 9, 2013

Probably my best morning there ever. I flushed a Swinhoe's Rail from right beside a marsh path clearly seeing the white on the upper wing. One wonders how they migrate at all as they are very clumsy in the air and so small. I'm still on a high more than 24 hours later after this sighting and will probably ride that train for the rest of the year! Unfortunately I didn't get any photos - flight shots of Swinhoe's Rail being a little on the rare side....;) An interesting note is that I returned after work with Stephen to look for it again and we flushed a Baillon's Crake approx. 100 feet from where the Swinhoe's was. It was also on top of the dike area that separates two ponds. We knew it was a needle in a haystack to try to find the Swinhoe's again but gave it a shot.

I do believe this is the most species seen there in a day. I was there for 3 early morning hours and only made it half way around my first pond! Pishing brought in everything from a wide radius and I was pleased to just stay in one area and take it all in. I'm returning tomorrow morning with my Dad. Early October is probably the best time of year there in terms of total species encountered. I will never have another day with Baillons Crake, Swinhoe's Rail, and Eastern Water Rail again. Sitting Bluethroats, feeding Peregrines, Cisticola's showing tail feathers, crazy morning!

Some of the species below did not come from the 3 early morning hours. I returned with my class from 11:00-12:00 and then again with Stephen from 4:00-5:00.

WOWOWOW! Congratulations Tom...!! I know how excited you were that morning and I would have been, too... Swinhoe's Rail is *extremely* difficult to see anywhere... and, as you know, I am still waiting..! Streaked Reed Warbler next...

Common and Pallas's Reed Bunting

Yesterday morning was a good chance to see both species side by side and do some comparison. The Common Reed Bunting is noticeably larger and has a slightly bulkier bill. A key field mark is the lower mandible shape. On Common Reed Bunting, the lower mandible is more curved. Some books show that Palls's Reed Bunting have a lighter coloured lower mandible than Common but I find this to be partially true. Of course the age of the bird probably makes a difference here as well. I was with Paul Holt at the Wafangdian Crane Site here just north of Dalian a few winters ago and he was teaching me the difference in call as well. I was trying to separate them by call yesterday morning but I'm afraid I'm in need a refresher in that area.....or there were no Common Reed calling;)

congratulations Tom - that's a huge bird to tick - and a day of amazing diversity as week - not too shabby at all!

Cheers
Mike

A Swinhoe's, a Baillon's crake, and TWO photos of a lancey all in the same day? I think you've used up all of your karma for quite a while.

Congrats on a fantastic day, Tom!

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds October 11, 2014

Early morning visit with my Dad. We had heavy fog when we arrived so went to a mountain valley area nearby that was fog-free. Picked up Brown-eared Bulbul and Radde's Warbler there and then returned once the sun was up and the fog burned off. We left a lot there but had to return because of time.

Had a woodpecker check out my motorbike, see the photo.....

Laotieshan Oct. 17, 2014

Went on a class trip to the banding station at Laotieshan. The southwest wind was blowing and raptors were migrating. This list consists of the banding station alone and a very short (15 minute) trip to look for porpoise with my class. If someone was seriously birding there that day, they would have had a very nice looking list.

I'll leave a full report to my students - we had a very good day.

I continue to be very impressed with Laotieshan as a birding destination the more times I can visit. Birds everywhere! Birds in the nets as fast as the helpers could retrieve them! Also, my ears were going crazy trying to process all the different calls. What a place!:eek!:

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds October 18, 2014

Had a great morning there again. So a Peregrine Falcon lands in front of me with a half dead Moorhen........check out the pictures. The Moorhen died after a few minutes and the Peregrine returned for it. It initially dropped it and took off because it hadn't seen me sitting there. Also all three Reed Bunting species this morning:king:

There was quite a bit of fog this morning so some o the pictures had to be tinkered with to make them clearer. The colours on the Common Reed Bunting are off a bit thanks to technology....or maybe I'm just not that good at it :)
