Nicaragua Bird Songs (1 Viewer)

I am about to go to Nicaragua. For work, not birding, but I hope to get away for a day or two. And on later trips I will add on a week if possible.
Never been birding in the Americas, so not sure where to start.
I see that birdsounds.nl has a CD on Nicaragua with 250 species and one on Costa Rica with 765 species. I assume that the CR CD covers most of the species in Nica as well, and that sooner or later I will end up with this CD anyway. But being a novice for the region, I am tempted anyway to start with the more consice collection of the Nica edition. Anyone knows these collections and can give me an opinion?

Thanks, Florian

And for a bird list of Nicaragua, is the one on Avibase good, or any better available on the net?
Thanks, Florian

Ok, I see, not so many Nicaragua-specialists around o:)

So I ordered the Nicaragua bird songs. Looks nice. When downloaded on the ipod, a little drawing is shown for each bird when the song is played, so probably good for a beginner like me. The Cd also includes and excel-birdlist.

Another nice piece I found is a this bird list : Lista Patron de las Aves de Nicaragua
It has less species than the avibase list, so probably it is not totally complete or up to date (its from 2007), but it does include info on range and habitat, and also does include a section on birding sites. But it's in Spanish only.

So well prepared now, I just need to find some time on my trip to actually see some birds.

Florian, good luck! when you are done, we would like to hear how well you did.

Thanks Niels! Just arrived yesterday night in Managua and this morning had a look around the hotel grounds. Probably all common birds, but nevetherless 20 lifers before breackfast. I love new places o:)

Ok, here now abit more on the results. It was quite good, very happy with the trip (although the free time I had was way too short).

On a practical note: I had the Costa Rica books from Garrigues, which is great, but certainly not enough in Nicaragua. Especially in Selve Negra, a lot of birds where not in this book.

Hi Florian,

You could try the guide by Van Perlo (Mexico & Central America). It's not that good, but does cover the entire region. Alternatively there's Ridgely's Panama guide, which gives more info and has an additional section covering CR, Nicaragua and Honduras.

No Nohatch, thanks for this hints. I may have a look at the Panama guide, the area covered is which interests me most.

I actually have the Howell and Webb, Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America, which I think together with Garrigues covers Nicaragua well. But as it is such a big book, I left it at home. Wrong decision, as I found out... :)
