Hi all,

I saw these two raptors today whilst walking up Mount Njullá.

I am from the UK so I am not quite sure about what birds to expect to see here.

Photos 1-3: This raptor looked like it may be a harrier, maybe a hen harrier?

Photos 4-5: Large falcon - peregrine or gyrfalcon?
note - It is holding prey which it had caught but I cannot work out what it was from the photo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Ryan

and i'd invite you to study the underwing patterns of kestrel and gyr falcon, ken. tom knows why he said kestrel.

I have no doubts about Tom’s understanding of underwing patterns, whether it’s at an unfortunately “odd” angle or not, it doesn’t look like a Kestrel to my eye, it looks too short tailed and stocky for F.tinnunculus?

Hen Harrier and Kestrel

Certainly doesn't have the 'feel' of a large falco.

RB

I confirm kestrel, if needed.

Kestrel for me too. Sometimes Kestrels are surprising, but looking at pattern and shape, (I sometimes take measurements of birds in a photo to check ratios) confirms for me that this is a Kestrel

Yes! a very “odd” looking Kestrel and just about within range, if the maps are anything to go by.

A good call Tom.
