Verano (non-HD) vs Monarch ? (1 Viewer)

The recent introduction of the Verano HD has generated some possible bargains as stock of the older Verano (open bridge model) is being sold at discount.

I wondered if anyone can give a comparison between the Verano 8x42 and the Nikon Monarch 8x42 (1st version).

Whilst the Monarch is a very competent performer, having acquired a small selection of other non 8x42 bins, I have come to think that an improvement in the sweetspot size and the contrast of the view would be welcome.

I've never done a side by side, so take my comments with a pinch of salt.

On paper they look very similar. About the same on size, weight and other specifications. When trying the both main niggle I had about both is the field of view. I've realised that in real use I'm much less aware of a narrow view in the field than I am when comparing a range of binos in a shop. With my IPD and hand size there feels no practical difference between the open and closed hinge designs so I have no preference on handling between the two.

The Monarch has been a popular and proven design and I guess I must be odd because I just don't like it. I've tried the MkII and MkIII, and while the latter is an improvement, I find the levels of colour fringing and glare unacceptable on both. This is rarely mention by others, so I suggest you check for yourself. I found the Verano much better in this regard. At the same price, if the choice was mine I'd go for the Verano.

Thanks for the info, David. Perhaps I should think again to get some bins that are clearly in a higher performance bracket.

Ok, the urge to scramble to get a bargain buy has passed by. I haven't seen a pair yet but am lead to believe that they may only offer an incremental step in performance.

I spoke on my local bin stockist to check that he had a few bins in for me to try. The main one of interest is the HRWP 8x42. None in stock and he isn't expecting any more. Not sure if that means that he has chosen not to restock them or if they are not available.
So, almost by way of an impulse buy, I've ordered a pair from a bin specialist further away. Will arrive on Monday. They seem to have a very similar FOV to my Monarch 8x42 bins, so in that respect they should be acceptable, given the comment on this forum.
Now I can stop scouring the bay.

I think you will be happy with them. They are better, optically, than the Monarchs. The 3D effect is very pronounced and I thought the sweet spot was wider than average for bins in this price range. Apparent brightness is also very good, most likely the result of the porro prism design.

All in all an excellent binocular for the price.

Dave the most reliable place in the North West to try-before-you-buy HR WP is Focalpoint Optics based near Warrington as this model is one of their core range.

I didn't know of Focalpoint Optics. It's not too far to visit if I need to check more out, but far enough to stop me "popping in" to check on what's new.
If the HRWP works out well, I will not need any new bins for a good time to come. (Or have I already fallen into the trap, just by being on this forum?).

Just a post to report that my HRWP 8x42 poros arrived today.
I am trying these as a replacement for my Monarch 8x42 with which I was becoming dissatisfied.
The HRWPs have a similar FOV to the Monarchs but have a longer minimum focus. The slightly longer focus isn't really an issue for me and I am used to that FOV.
In terms of sharpness, the size of area of sharpness (sweetspot?), contrast and CA, all are considerably better in the HRWP. They're very good.

I'll try them out for a while then perhaps post my more considered impressions in an appropriate thread. Thanks for the pointers. So far, I'm very pleased :)
