work party at Moors Today

We had a cracking day today achieved loads and some quality cake to round the day off.:eat: Thanks Tony:eat:;)
Many THANKs to the team of 16:t:
Bob O, Bobby P, Charles, Dave H, Ian J, Janet H, Jim B, John C, Keith M, Paul M, Peter E, Ray C, Roger, Terry W, Tony B and me

WORK:
Extended the west end of the Pool Island. This was achieved by digging a deep channel and piling the mostly clay clumps into a large mound on the end of the existing island. It was then compressed and the clay should hopefully form a hard wall, the softer side was shored up with slabs.

other work included strimming the bramble patch, putting ramps on islands and cleaning out the hides. see separate posts

The uncontrolled bramble patch along the whole of the west side of the Broadmeadow pool was strimmed and brash was burned. This has opened up much of the lagoon and much of it can now be viewed from the east hide.
This job would normally take two weeks but today there was no stopping the team:t:.

3. The Lagoon as viewed from south side, showing ideal wader habitat.

5. View of now open Broadmeadow from east hide.

Birding Moors Today

Before the work I noticed that the shoveler were performing their gyrating feeding 'dance'. The first time I have seen this for a couple of years . So maybe their food has returned, unlike the coots.
walking to the Broadmeadow we flushed a good total of common snipe but no Jack's.
During the work several species went over including mipits and a small group of swallows dropped in to feed and have a drink.
Afterwards the birds started to return and things returned to normal.

species count Moors:
Little grebe 5, little egret, Cormorant 22, greylag 12,mute swan 7, shoveler 108, teal 60, wigeon, gadwall 3, tufted 10, coot 19, water rail 3, snipe 32, green sand 2, lapwing 170, common gull 1st winter, Buzzard 6, sparrowhawk, kingfisher, green woodp, great sp woodp, skylark, swallow 6, meadow pipit 8, mistle thrush, redwing 2, cettis 2, goldcrest 2, nuthatch, grey wag, bullfinch 2, coal tit

Flashes This Evening

The gull roost was slow to appear possibly due to the reed cutting work. But when they did arrive there was plenty to see, which included 6 species and nearly 3000 birds.

As always the common gulls come in and very often fly out before roosting.
Tonight the 1st flash was full of large gulls and 2 Yellow legs were on here as well as a 1st winter Med. Large numbers of large gulls came in very late and far too dark to identify.
Species count:
Teal 65, shoveler 30 (with more arriving at dark). Gadwall 2, wigeon, egyptian geese 2, greylag geese 15, canadas c200+, coot 64, water rail 2, Snipe 20+, curlew 18, Lapwing 50+, Common Gull 5 (1x 3rd Winter, 4x 1st winter), Med Gull 1st winter, BHG 1600 - 1700, LBBG 850, Herring gull 350 - 400, Yellow Legged Gull 2 ads,
LITTLE OWL - on Sagebury farm barn. buzzard 2, stock dove 30, raven, cetti's w , Lesser Redpoll 6

Redd Cutting FLASHES

Today the Trust Volunteers cut the reeds along the east 2nd Flash and in front of the 3rd Flash. Showing how the area would look if the reeds were removed from this area. :t:

Well doesn't that look so much better?! Would be great if there wasn't a need to mow it each year .... Are the Trust raking up the cuttings?

Presumably you have added an extra zero John? 8-P

Did I see on Twitter that you also had the first returning Redpoll of the autumn?

Saw a barn owl crossing A38 from moors side to other side last night at 2003. It crossed about 200 yards Bromsgrove side of the moors entrance.

Nice one Scott so you saw 2 owls in an hour or so at upton upton warren with the Little owl earlier. Not many people achieved that at the reserve. Plus Med gull and Yellow Legged not a bad evening.:t:

The usual Wednesday crew is somewhat depleted to bay, so any of the crew could post later would be goid:t:. Or anyone else for that matter. Stuff is on the move - keep checking those gulls . Thete a few more species that could be foundB :)

It appears that the Trust are mowing reeds at flashes today. It wasnt made clear to me that this was happening today. Once again lack of communication sorry if you are inconvenienced. but to be fair most birds are on the Moors apart from the gull roost.
Please note cafe closes at 6pm tonight.
