Upton Warren (23 Viewers)

Dave J further reports from the Moors Pool:

Little Egret, Dunlin (Flashes bird briefly), 2 Coal Tits, Treecreeper, 3 Meadow Pipit, 2 Redpoll, 2 Siskin

Massive thanks to Dave j for today for the Caspian gull. Cheers Dave. To add to todays spots. Caught a pair of kingfishers flying up the path from cuckoo hide towards henbrook. And a little grebe on the sailing pool.

Disappointingly no sign of the Caspo in the roost tonight. Hundreds of gulls passed over in formation heading north. But the bulk of the large gulls didn't arrive until 30 minutes before dark. In all 800 large gulls were on the water at any one time, some moved on. An almost definate adult YLG was present but the clinching feature of leg colour couln't be added. Only 20 or so herring gulls. Also tonight 1200 BHG.
Shoveler 57. teal 60+. Avocet. Snipe 3. Green sand 2. dunlin . Curlew 18. lapwing 150. rook 12. siskin. Cetti's . Reed buntings 12 or so we're seen dropping in reeds to roost. siskin

Dave J reports from the Flashes this morning:

2 Avocets, Green Sandpiper, Barnacle Goose, 2 House Martin, 27 Meadow Pipit, 6 Redpoll, 13 Siskin, 4 Skylark, 11 Swallow

Dave J further reports at the Moors Pool:

Dunlin briefly, Barnacle Goose, 2 Wigeon, 2 Coal Tits, 2 Siskin, 21 House Martin, 5 Meadow Pipit.

Bit of a regional influx of Rock Pipit today with two to the south at Ripple and two to the north at Blithfield with one through Belvide.

Hi Richard - was the Stonechat the same individual photographed by Spoonbill Finder (see post further up the page) or a different bird?

Only had 2 hours at the Flashes tonight. with Dave W Crofty and Keith M. A bit of a scrub watch between steps and cuckoo hide was rewarding for so late in the day. Worth checking it out from the side of the cuckoo hide for a while. On to the main hide for the roost, where a slow start turned into a flood of large gulls late on and they were still arriving as we left.

Only had about 100 gulls flying towards westwood coming from Grimley way this evening looks like most are going up to Upton? Any idea what's going on in the area?

The high numbers of large gulls coming into the autumn roost is a recent phenonoma. They have been building up rapidly over the last 3 years. Culminating in the record totals of the last few days. It may be as a result of local tip closures forcing the birds to feed closer to Upton and therefore roosting here. It could also be that the numbers are building up due to the lack of disturbance at Upton as opposed to Bartley and Westwood. Whatever the reason it is certainly a sight to behold seeing the Flashes full to the brim with birds. With the added bonus of drawing in unusual species, as witnessed yesterday. Long may it continue B :)

Please note that there will be further management / surveying work at the Flashes tomorrow (Tuesday 29th September) between 9am and 1pm. The Trust notice advises visitors to go to the Moors Pool but of course there is a regular work party there - I am sure John will advise on the likely level of disturbance at the Moors Pool
