RSPB Launches Red Kite Viewing Scheme in Yorkshire

Bird spotters celebrate red kites

The bird was reintroduced locally six years ago

The RSPB is launching its weekend red kite viewing scheme.
Volunteers will be on hand every Sunday at the birds' viewing platform which is based at Yorkshire Water's Eccup reservoir near Leeds.

It is an opportunity for people to spot and learn about the red kites which were reintroduced to Yorkshire in 1999.

RSPB volunteer Kirsten Whittaker says the red kite is an "amazing" bird and it will be an interesting day out for the people who visit the platform.

Also a bit boring as the kites are no longer seen as often from the Eccup site. When the re-introduction started it was a brilliant place to watch them with sometimes double figures of birds in the air. Now it seems the birds have dispersed. The best place to see them is near Harewood Bank, the birds are often seen over the fields on the right as you descend from Harewood to the River Wharfe. They are also regularly seen close to the A1 near to the A64 junction.

Keith, I'm going to be in the area next month and would love to see Red Kite in the UK, especially in my native Yorkshire. Any chance that you could PM me a more exact description of location close to the A1/A64 junction? Thanks in advance.
