Well-known member
wahingtoniensis, washingtoniana or washingtonii which has priority and which is the right species name?
I listened to an ABA podcast:
https://www.aba.org/j-j-audubon-and-the-bird-of-washington-fraud-with-matthew-halley/ .
And the author of the BBOC article uses washingtonii.
This is sort of stupid question because the bird is fake.
Audubon uses washingtoniensis on the plate in 1827.
https://www.antiqueaudubon.com/store/p38/11-The-Bird-Washington.html .
Improper latin?
Audubon uses washingtoniana in 1828.
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/19421#page/139/mode/1up .
Audubon uses washingtonii in 1838.
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/103784#page/86/mode/1up .
An article which disagrees with BBOC.

Regarding the Etymology itself, of "THE BIRD OF WASHINGTON. FALCO WASHINGTONII" ...

Either way, even if a fake and fabricated taxon (and regardless of which spelling truly ought to be considered as the proper one), it got a one of the most embellished dedications that I have ever seen, full of the uttermost praise for the dedicatee:

[...]
The name which I have chosen for this new species of Eagle, "The Bird of Washington," may, by some, be considered as preposterous and unfit; but as it is indisputably the noblest bird of its genus that has yet been discovered in the United States, I trust I shall be allowed to honour it with the name of one yet nobler, who was the saviour of his country, and whose name will ever be dear to it. To those who may be curious to know my reasons, I can only say, that, as the new world gave me birth and liberty, the great man who ensured its independence is next to my heart. He had a nobility of mind, and a generosity of soul, such as are seldom possessed. He was brave, so is the eagle; like it, too, he was the terror of his foes; and his fame, extending from pole to pole, resembles the majestic soarings of the mightiest of the feathered tribe. If America has reason to be proud of her Washington, so has she to be proud of her Great Eagle.

One must admit; presenting a Grand Eagle, unknown to all, larger than any other, named after the the First President, the ''Father of His Country' himself, sure was a clever marketing move, to get the attention of a Nation, his own name known, and his brand-new Great Book Project Birds of America moving from the shelves.

Audubon was not only a brilliant ornithologist and a ditto Bird painter, but also an excellent publicity and advertising expert [alt. (m)adman].

Thanks Mark, for the Good read!

Björn

PS. Mark, hope you get well (from whatever fever you've got, sure hope it's not the covid-19). Fingers crossed.

Thanks Björn and Imans66. My sentence needed the proper use of hyphens. I have cabin-fever caused by the quarentine caused by the corona virus. I was wondering if President Washington was a slave trader but I could not find the right sub-forum.

Thanks Niels. The teeth thing is horrifying. The fugitive slave act was more horrifying. Sugar coating our past does not help USA get better. At least Washington did not try and become the biological Father of America as President Jefferson did.

I agree that having a realistic impression of what the people who came before us would help. However, I also feel that sometimes we are judging people in past centuries too harshly: they were in many cases doing what everyone around them were doing and told in church etc that they were doing the right thing. Once you get to a time where information and discussions about the topics are common, then you have more right to be judgmental about those who were on the wrong side of ethics.
