Using tools in photoshop (1 Viewer)

When using a tool in photoshop can anyone please tell me how to close that particular tool down. When I have finished using one I cannot get that particular tool to stop appearing on the next picture. The only solution I seem to find is to clock on another and then the situation repeats itself. I guess I must be doing something dumb but I'm not sure what!!

I usually finish off by clicking on the magnifier tool, as that's harmless and can't do anything irreversible.

I either click on the path selection tool or the magnifier like Michael.

Many thanks - at least I haven't missed a correct way of shutting down a particular tool.
