Panama/Costa Rica field guides (1 Viewer)

Can I use Garrigues' Birds of Costa Rica as a portable field guide in Panama if I have Ridgely's Panama (too large to carry) FG available in the car and/or hotel room? Or are there too many birds that Panama and Costa Rica don't have in common? Is Van Perlo's illustrated checklist of Mexico and Central America a better choice even though the illustrations too many, are very small and not as good as Garriques'?

I have not tried what you propose, but found that I could carry Ridgely's guide in my backpack whereever I went. The place where I really missed the Costa Rica Guide (which I do not own) was close to the border in western Panama. Some of the species, even if they have the same name, are represented by subspecies that look different between western and the rest of Panama.

Cheers
Niels
