hi
we're coming to Florida from UK in feb/mar next year. We are into all nature but obviously birds first. I would like advice on best area to stay please. Having never been before we want to see everything ! , obviously we can't. So what is best strategy i.e. hire car , organized trips etc . Hoping you can help thanks

Check out Paco's "Birding in Florida" thread. Also click on the link that Andy posted in the thread...a link to another thread about same subject. It just depends on what your goals are , and time , and do you want to stay north/south/central---but you must see the Everglades, which is discussed in these threads as well.
I have stayed in 2 cute bed and breakfast places in Florida City--that was in the summer-off season so it was cheap. That would put you into the heart of Everglades National Park--a vast place. http://nps.gov/ever/index.htm
Also check out the Green Cay/Wakodahatchee threads here. That'll would put you further up north in Palm Beach County. You can also see a smaller section of the Everglades up here
at Loxahatchee A>R>M> Wildlife refuge :http://fws.gov/loxahatchee/ Other posters might know about actual guided trips through the Audubon societies.

And yes , hiring a car would be a good idea as public transportation here is a joke, especially to the places you want to go!

I would recommend staying in the Homestead/Florida City area if you want to be able to bird Everglades National Park, as it will get you within easy access to the main park road that leads from Anhinga Trail to Flamingo.

Everglades City is on the other side of the park in a totally different county...

No worries! Let us know if you have any other questions once you have a clearer idea of what you want to do and how much time you have.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
