Thumbs up Christmas Birding In Florida Ideas

My family (myself, wife & daughter) will be traveling to Orlando area for two week this Christmas & I am looking for any birding clubs, organized birding outing that may be available. I am will to travel from the Orlando area to see something interesting. I spent two months this summer coordinating a Piping Plover protection project in Sauble Beach, Ontario (Canada) as we had a nesting pair for the first time in 25 years. It would be great if I could see plovers in Florida during this trip.

I am open to suggestions. Looking forward to your replies.

regards

stew

It's a bit of a haul, but Sanibel Island near Fort Myers and the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge offers excellent birding.

Plenty of Florida tips in the State by State USA Index below. I would suggest Merrit Island for starters, also Joe Overstreet, St Cloud. In both areas a wide range of birds can be seen from the car.

Stew,

Piping Plovers were present at Fort de Soto viewed (more distant than I would have liked) from the North Beach area along with Wilson's and SemiPs. Lots of other good birds there too !! Let me know if you're interested in more details.

Hi Stew -

I am halfway through preparing a dozen or so local day-trip guides with locations, driving instructions, species, etc. for birders who stay in my villa. If you're anywhere in the Orlando area, you could adapt them for your own use (just a different starting point on your route). PM me with an e-mail address if you think that could be useful.

Also make sure to read some trip reports for the area. My experience is that these often have valueable local information. I normally use the Travellingbirder web site to seek trip reports, because it is possible to view reports from a specific month(s):

Trip reports from Florida in December:
http://www.travellingbirder.com/trip...?from=12&to=12

Trip reports from Florida in January:
http://www.travellingbirder.com/trip...hp?from=1&to=1

Have a nice trip,

Dieter

Be aware that Ding Darling is closed on Fridays.

There is a Vermillion Flycatcher near Sanford for the 2nd year running and that is worth picking up along with the other birds that appear there.

Drop me an email for instructions, if I am not working more than happy to show you.
