Flamingo threat at Lake Natron, Tz

Just received this from an African colleague:

Tata Chemicals (India) Ltd and National Development Corporation of Tanzania are proposing to construct a soda ash plant at LAKE NATRON in Tanzania. The lake is the only significant breeding site for lesser flamingos in Eastern Africa. The surrounding cross border ecosystem is critical in sustaining the livelihoods of the local communities. The proposed plant could seriously affect the breeding of this near threatened species – thus wiping out 75% of the global Lesser Flamingo population. The livelihoods of these local communities are also at risk.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6292434.stm

The Lake Natron Consultative Group is spearheading a campaign against the proposal and is requesting people to sign up to a petition to halt this development. If you wish to object, E-mail [email protected] with your name, city/town and country followed by a short message NOT EXCEEDING 10 WORDS, stating that you wish to object. The group will amalgamate signatures and send the petition to the Government of the Republic of Tanzania and Tata Chemicals Ltd. It will also be copied to all governments in the Eastern African Region and other relevant authorities.

Forward this information to as many relevant people as possible.

Cheers

Ilya

Done (although keeping my objection down to 10 words wasn't easy!)
