The Green ghost ( Zeiss SF 8X42 ) (1 Viewer)

GLOBETROTTER

Well-known member
Green cast......is like absinthe for me, a pleasure to drink but not to see.

Today i went to Madrid's largest photography store and I was playing with a Black SF 8X42 Serial number 4372227 for one hour and a half,I am lucky because I am a friend of the owner so I also took the binoculars to the street on a bright sunny day.

I just held the binoculars in my hand, the first thing I did was to look straight at the optical coatings, what a surprise they are no longer reddish like those of the eyepieces and present on first units.

Now are more like those on the HT but slightly different, check the pictures attached.
I was amazed so i tried to see the coatings from different angles and light, they are different.

Now the view is completely different, Much better without any significant trace of green or any other color cast and the transparency of view was amazing.

Definitely the intense green tint of first units gives muted colours and also affected the transparency of the image, also noticed for Roger vine of scope views.uk.

So they change the coating........Thanks Zeiss but what happens with the 8X25 ?

I also had the opportunity to try this model and after fist look to the front lenses again the strong reddish coating, of course strong green cast again.

All the best from Madrid.

It is too bad that some like to keep referring to the green color thing on the Victory SF.

90% of SF users will not notice a green cast or give a care, if a very few think they see one.

It seems just like rolling ball or globe effect, often mentioned but largely a non-factor.

Nitpicking by nitnoids.....unfortunate....|:(|

Why unfortunate? Nitpicking is inherent to any enthusiast forum. I can only assume that you are a paid social media intervention specialist working for Zeiss. If not, you are a volunteer booster, which is something I have a hard time understanding (and to which I would say "unfortunate" if I weren't such a strong believer in "to each their own"). I save my charity for nonprofit organizations. If, according to your statistics, 10% of SF users notice a green cast, it's something that any even moderately well-informed prospective buyer would likely want to know. I'm glad to see that at least one viewer who could see the green (i.e. GLOBETROTTER) thinks it is gone with current production.

Alexis:

I like that, "A paid social media specialist".o:D

What bothers me is that if somebody looking for a new binocular is dissuaded by the talk about a green cast of a Zeiss Victory SF.

The same applies to the "rolling ball" situation of the Swarovski Swarovision.
I have made the same point on that binocular.

I am paid very well, many companies appreciate my help, I tell it like it is, not like a few nitpickers do. ;) Recently not a good word about the excellent optics and ergos of the Victory SF, just the color thing.

It is about fair play, I stand up for the downbeaten.

Jerry

Add on: I like binoculars, and have purchased and own examples of both of these models I mentioned when they first came out.

No, I am not currently running for any office. But I have served in 2 elective offices in the past.

I am currently busy testing a new binocular model that is in secret testing. I will leak a photo, it is
a real animal.

More to follow. As a paid tester, I am privy to great optics....;)

Jerry,

What people see is what people see ! :)

It is not up to any individual or group of individuals to dismiss that.

If 10 or 20% or whatever the figure is, of people see rolling ball, or a particular colour cast then as Alexis said, that's a valid point - especially likely to crop up on a micro-navel gazing forum such as this. We all have a diverse physiology which affects what we see (and what the brain reconstructs for us).

Your point is equally as valid - for the majority of people it is a non-issue. How much it gits yar goat depends on which side of the fence you fall on ...... :cat:

For me, I really appreciate a completely neutral view, and perhaps detect subtle colours more readily than other people. I also readily see CA. Thankfully though I seem to be in the majority group of people that are unaffected by rolling ball - I don't see it in
either any Swaro SV, nor the 42mm SF's.

I do see the what has been described as the 'green ham' colour cast to the SF though (black armour unit, ~2 years old) ..... it's warm though - more accurately like the colour of Corned Silverside with a mild greenish tint laid over the top ! :brains: :cat: :eat:

Corned-Beef-SF.jpg

YMMV :)

I enjoy reading all the different perspectives of individual people on here - deciphering it is a bit like trying to put an X-Files mystery together ! :-O

I like the book, Green Eggs and Ham, it is a favorite of mine, I have practice reading it to my kids
and Grandkids.
Lots of good colors there, not sure if there is any bias though, you would need to consult an expert or someone who thinks they are, and are fussy enough to be bothered...:smoke:

Jerry,

Different people are allowed different priorities.

Some restaurants have welcoming service, others big helpings, others great reputations with lotsa Michelin stars.
Some binoculars have a pleasant view, some are supersharp over a large sweet spot, some have great ergonomics and some have great color.

Reviews and friendly advice help you choose so you buy what you need, what you want, and what you can afford.

Absolutely true. We all have a diverse physiology.

And this should read: "I really appreciate what I think is a completely neutral view, and I think I perhaps detect subtle colours more readily than other people."

After all, how can you be sure?

Lol ! :-O

I'm sure :t:

#whenyouknowyouknow ......
I've got a very good absolute reference - this world, this physical manifestation - it's hardly my first rodeo :) :cat:

Mostly, young women have good eyes and one can listen to what they have to say.
Or one can validate one’s opinion with a measuring instrument, I own 7 spectros.

Here, especially for Jerry, is the Xrite color test.
https://www.xrite.com/hue-test
Attached, my score on my phone.
Edmund

Very interesting, thanks. I scored 6 - per my tablet for a 64 year old Male, on my Samsung tablet
Blue - Green were my 3 downfalls per the result, perhaps that could be why I do not see a green hue on my early 8/32 FL nor a black 8/42 SF.
