John's Mammals 2018 (1 Viewer)

I have been busy in the last week, some small mammal trapping and some bat catching locally. Pygmy and common shrews, bank and field voles, wood mouse, soprano and common pipistrelle and brown long eared bat.

Not much recently a visit to Donna Nook for the seals was good and I saw one being born. And a few roe deer locally.

Probably my final mammal action of the year, Chinese water deer at Woodwalton Fen, which takes me to 50 for the year, I have now seen 50 species in the UK every year since 2008.

Well done Mark, that really does take some work! I've fallen short this year with a "mere" 44, but some sensational encounters among them.

Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year!

John

About 70 Red Deer including one huge-antlered mega-stag among about a dozen prime adult males at Ober Common in the New Forest on 27th. Unfortunately after Clare and I had made a suitably circumspect approach to the opposite side of the bog inside the treeline, some dimwit with a big Sigma over his shoulder on a monopod came traipsing along right in the open and flushed the whole lot back into the woods. I really hope he hadn't got the pictures he wanted. I'll put up some of my results when I've worked through them: good records rather than proper portraits.

Common Seal in the harbour from Farlington Marshes seawall yesterday was a nice surprise.
