Had to go out to Washington state to add birds. The first raven was a bit iffy, though we were in a train thru a national park, but I got it later at Hurricane Ridge too. eBird reviewer challenged my common tern as it was a few weeks too early for the area. But it was not a Caspian.

This morning I made the seven-hour round-trip drive to the Ohio River Valley to chase a mega rarity that was found yesterday. I easily found my target (the phalarope) plus another new shorebird for the year.

394. Red Phalarope
395. Semipalmated Plover

The Red Phalarope was a West Virginia lifer (number 281). In addition, I added Least Bittern to my state list (number 282). It was not listed above because I saw one in Panama in February.

This morning I found a mega rarity at one of my local patches.

396. Yellow-crowned Night Heron

It was a state lifer (number 283) and Preston County lifer (number 238). It was also one of the few records of this species in the state.

This evening a couple of nighthawks flew over my yard. Every year, within a day or two of August 20, migrating nighthawks begin flying over, and will continue for about a month.

397. Common Nighthawk

This morning I made the long drive to south-central West Virginia to chase a rare bird for this state. I easily found my target once I got to the location.

398. Mississippi Kite

It was a state lifer (number 284), my eighth of the year. Last weekend a non-birder reported two adults and a juvenile to eBird. The birds apparently have been breeding in his neighborhood for the past three years or so. He never knew what they were, but he did some research, identified the birds, and realizing that they shouldn’t be breeding here, reported them to eBird. I believe this represents the first documented breeding record of Mississippi Kite for West Virginia.

This evening I reached the 400 mark for the year while watching for migrating nighthawks in my yard.

400. Olive-sided Flycatcher

Although relatively uncommon, this is a species I look for this time of year. However, they’re usually found in high-elevation bogs, and are much rarer at lower elevations.

Also, got the common tern a second time, so despite it being a few weeks too early in Seattle (so not part of record for them), this one I have proof and photo.

This year has not been great for me birding wise as I've just not had as much time as usual. Today, I spent an enjoyable morning at Hjälstaviken, near Uppsala and I managed to get my first year tick since July:

From Denmark 28th Sept-5th Oct

Lots of rain with breaks to grab the scope, bins and to try out my new Nikon D500

316 Merlin
317 Grey Plover
318 Eurasian Curlew
319 Great Black backed Gull
320 Common Greenshank

We observed a Merlin hunting a Kingfisher. My wife and I and 4 Danes that were also there were all rooting for the Kingfisher and it escaped. It took a while before it got going again, it's poor heart must have been racing. We all agreed that the Merlin had to eat, but not the Kingfisher.
