When Kangaroos Attack ! (1 Viewer)

Drought ....

A perfect storm of persistent drought, historical poor land management practices eroding and drying the landscape, clearing of lush riparian vegetation and degradation and destruction of wetlands, and increasing suburban creep into former woodland areas, is seeing greater contact and conflict between kangaroos and humans.

Some of the safety advice given in this thread is all the more pertinent at these times.

I have come across a recording of a (likely a big male) kangaroo "grunting" .... this is an indicator of territorial (mating, feed, water, shelter security) threat, and a precursor to aggressive behaviour (sometimes along with other indicators - at other times attacks can come completely out of the blue). For those city slickers, visitors, or tourists, this is a handy indicator of what to look out/listen for:

As always the best policy (if you get the chance) is to avoid confrontation and remove yourself at the earliest opportunity. Back away in a submissive posture, don't make direct eye contact, stand tall, or square up in any way, and make use of intervening shelter - trees, etc. If you have to fight* like a b*st*rd to save your life then do so - arm yourself with a hefty branch for a club if available - BUT ! Always with the view of removing yourself ASAP and getting the heck out of there ! :t:
* To give you an idea of what you'd be up against - imagine a 2m tall no rules Mike Tyson with Wolverine-like claws on hands and feet who thinks you have inappropriate intentions towards his missus, coming at you relentlessly ....... and you'd be getting close ! :eek!:

Woman attacked in the driveway! - video recreation and interview

I've posted this video (recreation), since it contains the 'grunting' sound that an aggressive kangaroo will make. The sound in this video is not from a big buck boomer from what I can tell - they have a much deeper and louder booming grunt. I would say that if you hear this sound - trouble's brewin' ! :eek!: ..... and you should remove yourself from the situation immediately.

It is interesting that this lady says she was attacked after she curled up in a ball - indicating that the attack was imminent. I would reiterate that the best policy is to remove yourself, place something between you and the roo - pole, tree, climb up on the roof of the car or whatever, also using whatever is at hand at the time - but always with the aim of removing yourself. If you have to, fight to get away.

Interesting also that the husband hitting the roo with a shovel had little effect - remember, these are ~150-200lbs of muscle and powerful sinew attached to disemboweling toenails and shredding claws ..... all wrapped up in a thick tough leather package (the leather of choice for MotoGP riders)

Curling up into a ball on the ground may save your eyes - but you are going to get beat and ripped up. I think it pays to observe natural behaviour when a dominant male fights challengers or subordinates - just about all of those fights that I can recall, only cease when the loser bounds away - leaving the victor to claim the territory.

If a big cranky roo decides that where you are is 'their' territory (even if it is your own yard !) then conflict is likely until you remove yourself (at the time)

Rags the Kangaroo Attacks Marty the Monster !

You can see from these two videos that a big male kangaroo will take on 'something' bigger than it (even though they are 2m tall or more !) .... And although they are well known for the power and danger of their hind legs, their forearms are powerful enough to wrestle or even throw a man to the ground, put him in a headlock, and hold him down.

Rags is pretty much playing in these videos. Imagine once the red mist descends and they really fire up and get cranky ! Add the shredding claws and dagger like toenails and you seriously don't want to mess with these things ! :eek!:

Family Survive Horrifying Kangaroo Attack

"Mr Smith said the rogue kangaroo was a big grey about two metres tall that became aggressive without warning and lashed out with its front paws."

"Linda suffered three broken ribs, a punctured lung and a torn liver, and underwent surgery on Sunday night at Toowoomba Hospital"

""I just keep having flashbacks of it attacking me as I tried to crawl away. Without breath I didn't think I was going to make it," she said."

Jeez - if the animals don't get ya, the climate will !

But also, on a more serious note, a spate of deaths in the outback from heat have prompted reminders - be safe out there ..... hades is starting to look like a desirable destination to cool off!

Jay-zus !! Python swallows Wallaby whole !!!

The other week I saw a report and pictures of a WA 'Python' swallowing what looked to be a sizeable Goanna, and now, as if Crocs roaming the streets is not enough, comes footage of another huge (though still only a half-sized 'pup') Python swallowing a whole Wallaby in some bloke's backyard, after a near miss on his German Shepherd Dog ! :eek!:

It's like living in Jurassic Park !! :-O

Oh another thing. On the bird topic. Is there a type of bird that you definitely would not want to enter an enclosure of? The only three birds I would think that would be immediately dangerous to a person if you walked in it's enclosure would be the Ostrich, Emu, and Cassowary. But are there any others? They haven't cloned the terror bird yet? Ha. Also I hope this doesn't make me sound callous but I think it is therapeutic every once in a while to see a story of a person attacked or mauled by an animal at a zoo. It gets our mind off of all of the sexual assault crap or flag burning that you constantly hear. And I am glad that zoo keepers and authorities are getting better at not killing the animals because of human negligence. Seriously that whole story reminded me of that M. Night Shymalan movie The Happening. That guy who walked into the lion enclosure and stuck out his arm for the lion to eat him. A zombie.

End this dummy woman with a line from Shakespeare.
