Trystan's World List 2020 (1 Viewer)

02.08.20

Wykeham

Failing to live up to the spectacular displays of last year, a ten second view of a pale type descending into the trees.

215. Honey buzzard

11.08.20

Lovely afternoon at Spurn yesterday.

218. Collared flycatcher - 1st UK
219. Red backed shrike
220. Greenshank
221. Pectoral sandpiper
222. Icterine warbler

Not often would I expect to dash past where an Icterine warbler was showing but priority had to be given to the flycatcher as a UK tick. Hope the DNA confirms the observations from the field!

Icterine warbler then proved very elusive but showed well in the end. Great supporting cast of waders at the wetlands and lots of pied flycatchers for comparison.

16.08.20

Last butterfly trip of the year abandoned due to this weather so ended up at Spurn again. Not quite such a successful trip. After a promise start to the sea watch it turned into a failed barred warbler stakeout. Still red back shrikes and some decent common migrants around.

223. Arctic skua
224. Long tailed skua
225. Common scoter (ahem, quite!)

23.08.20

Short excursion only today to look at the influx of 12 curlew sandpipers at Swillington.

226. Curlew sandpiper

07-14.09.20

A much needed break to Italy which seemed one of the few places I could get to and from with minimal risk of quarantine. Shortly after booking, all the numbers started going up again but not enough in the end to cause any problems.

Not a birding trip, more of a bucket list trip, having never done Italy before, a chance to see Rome with a trip down to Pompeii too.

Here's a quick run down of the 37 species seen, mostly around the parks in Rome listed here in a pretty random order.

1. Hooded crow - everywhere
2. Feral pigeon - everywhere
3. Yellow legged gull - everywhere (world year tick 228 for what it's worth)
4. Italian sparrow - everywhere (229)
5. Rose ringed parakeet - everywhere
6. Collared dove - a few around, most seen in Caffarella park
7. Monk parakeet - all parks (230)
8. Blackbird - all parks
9. Goldfinch - a couple of flocks in open grassy areas
10. Cattle egret - from the train to Pompeii
11. Bee-eater - One high over head at Pompeii (231)
12. Serin - heard more than seen. One or two in trees near Roma forum (232)
13. Sardinian warbler - heard more than seen. Several in Roma forum and Caffarella park
14. House martin - a few times in flocks
15. Swallow - occasional in large parks
16. Chaffinch - one seen at Villa Borghese park
17. Woodpigeon - one flew over at Caffarella park
18. Mallard - On the Tiber and at Caffarella park
19. Grey heron - Tiber
20. Cormorant - Tiber
21. White wagtail - Tiber
22. Kingfisher - Two at Caffarella park
23. Cetti's warbler - One seen, heard often at Caffarella park
24. Lesser spotted woodpecker - One in Caffarella park
25. Moorhen - Caffarella park
26. Coot - Caffarella park
27. Teal - One in Caffarella park
28. Kestrel - A few around parks
29. Redstart - One in Caffarella park
30. Magpie - Mostly from train to Pompeii and Caffarella park
31. Buzzard - Several from Train to Pompeii and one over Rome
32. Blue tit - Around parks
33. Great tit - Around parks but less common than blue tit
34. Long tailed tit - Small flocks in larger parks
35. Firecrest - Seen twice in parks
36. Short toed treecreeper - One in Colle Oppio park (233)
37. Starling - Seen often

Also a few swifts around which I expect were Common but couldn't rule out Pallid from the views so not included on the list.

For completeness sake for my country lists:

Vatican city

1. Feral pigeon
2. Hooded crow
3. Yellow legged gull

26.09.2020

Cant clough reservoir

234. (228.) Wryneck

Very showy individual flew in to about 15ft of me, hard to keep in the scope.

A mad dash on a wild goose chase for Lesser white fronted goose afterwards was futile.

Went back for another attempt. Maybe not quite as much a wild goose as hoped for but this can sit on my list as a placeholder until one with better provenance turns up.

235. (229.) LESSER WHITEFRONTED GOOSE

04.10.2020

Kilminning

236. (230.) Common rosefinch
237. (231.) Yellow browed warbler
238. (232.) SIBERIAN THRUSH

Truly awful views managed of this bird. Much further than I'd normally travel and left feeling it wasn't worth the time and money.

11.10.2020

Surprisingly good day after the anticipated clear out over night. 80 species seen in total.

Spurn

239. (233.) Long eared owl
240. (234.) Bar tailed godwit
241. (235.) Sooty shearwater
242. (236.) Lapland bunting
243. (237.) Manx shearwater
244. (238.) Black throated diver

15.10.2020

Trow quarry

245. (239.) Taiga flycatcher - First UK, hopefully at least. It did seem to have warmer browner tones than expected but the tail looked spot on so lets see which way it goes.

South gare

246. (240.) Short toed lark - First UK Unexpectedly easy to catch up with, scope filling views

17.10.2020

Lindisfarne

Obviously realised half way up that I should have been going the other way but a good day nonetheless, finally getting brown shrike on my UK list.

247. (241.) Brown shrike - 1st UK
248. (242.) Barred warbler
249. (243.) Red flanked bluetail

Called at South Gare on the way back and saw the claimed Eastern stonechat. Not convinced myself but I believe a sample has been taken and happy to be proved wrong.

18.10.2020

Stiffkey

Couldn't pass this up so out for a second time this weekend. After poor distant flight views to start with, the chat eventually popped out and showed brilliantly.

250. (244.) Rufous bush chat - 1st UK

Titchwell

251. (245.) Pallas's warbler

Just an update from all the DNA birding I seem to be doing at the moment.

218 - Not-a-collared flycatcher is now replaced with the confirmed Stejneger's stonechat at south gare.

Looks like the Taiga flycatcher is safe, but have not added the Brown shrike at Johnny Brown's Common to my Yorkshire list.
