RSPB Middleton Lakes (3 Viewers)

Quick visit this evening. 3 Ruff, 4 Little Egret on JWs. A small group of Swift over the river.

On a sour note there were motorbike tyre tracks from the Dosthill side, over the bridge and right round Jubilee Wetlands. This is something we all feared might happen once the bridge was in place. Let's hope that the RSPB will be able to install something to stop them just riding up the ramps.

All the best

Steve

ps Unfortunately I'm not going to be around for the all dayer, is anybody else? Geoff, Steve?

The West Midlands Autumn All-Day Birdwatch is on the Saturday 5th September; would be great if Middleton could keep a tally :t::t:
I will be hoping to see Barred Warbler and some Skuas on the birdwatch day but probably not at Midd Lakes. I will be doing the monthly list in September though, 116 in September 2014 to beat.
Todays list included 6 Little Egret, a few Ringed Plover and LRP, 1 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper, 3 Wood Sandpiper on NP but flew off south, 5 Common Sandpiper, 3 Ruff, 3 Common Tern and 3 Swift.

Todays sightings, 1 Bar-headed Goose, 1 Wigeon, 2 LRP, 1 Snipe, 3 Black-tailed Godwit JWs, 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Wood Sandpiper JWs, 3 Common Sandpiper and 3 Ruff.
3 Hobby reported per KT (TVB).
Geoff

After last nights heavy rain water levels at the river inlet were up by 18" so there was very little edge for waders to feed however the following were still around, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 3 Common Sandpiper and 3 Ruff. Very little else was noted.
Geoff

Must have been standing next to Steve Atkinson when photoing Wood Sand,
here`s my pic.
Of interest I saw a Clouded Yellow butterfly on the West path of JWs, record pic attached. Also Hobby over.

Richard

Had a good morning at Muddleton today. Lashed it down with rain till 11 but managed eclipse Garganey, 2 Greenshank over and Green Sand through the downpour. Held tight in the hide for a while to dry off and had Common, Green and Wood sands (Wood new for me). RSPB warden popped in briefly, thanks for the info and chat! Heading back from the hide had a Hobby heading West and got chatting to a guy who'd had Mandarin and Ruff. In the wood had an amazingly tame family of Nuthatch, hopped right on the bench next to me. Great wet morning! One of my better days there.

Haha, and yourself! Hope the rest of your day there was as productive as your morning; I failed to find the Ruff and Mandarins!! Can't complain though.

All-Day Birdwatch

It's been a while since my last visit and had high expectations, as usual, but could probably count the birds seen on one hand. Water levels are high including on the two scrapes - not looking good for Saturday. Only birds of note were Hobby on JW and a Garganey plus Green Sand up the West side of NP. A hand full of Wigeon were about - my first for the Autumn at Middleton.

The Farmer was ploughing the field on the West side so may attract something tonight - Wheatear maybe?

Phil - I'm still negotiating a pass out from the wife for Saturday's all-day event but she does owe me big time having just returned from a package holiday she booked near the Syrian border.

Hi Steve, I managed 56 species today with the help of one or two other birders. 95 species were seen in August (92 in 2014 and 98 in 2013).
Highlights today were 1 Goosander on JWs, 3 Hobby, 1 Ringed Plover, 3 Green Sandpiper, 2 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Ruff and 8 species of Warbler.

As I've said before I must walk round with my eyes closed. Didn't see a single wander on JW. Where were the two Wood Sandpipers.

Steve

1 on JWs and 1 NP as viewed from western track beyond bench, same place as 3 Green Sands, 2 Common Sands and the Ringed Plover, part of this area can also be seen distantly from the hide.

I know where you mean Geoff, I saw Common and Green Sands from there last week shortly after they took the rope off the gate.
Steve

2 Pintail on JWs were new in today, waders seen included 1 Ringed Plover, 2 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper and a Wood Sandpiper. A Hobby was chasing Swallows.
