New Year's Day birding tick race in Sussex

Wow - what a day - we started at about midday just looking out into the garden, then went to West Wittering (accompanied by every family, their dogs and BBQs), then Church Norton, finally a frantic run around at Arundel WWT in the nearly pitch-black, which gave us an extra around 14 species!

Managed 87 species around East Kent. Staggeringly this list does not include Greenfinch or Goldfinch, only Kestrel and Marsh Harrier in the raptors and only Little Owl. So plenty of scope to improve this over the next few days.

Had family calling around so was restricted to what I could see out of the window :C Very wet and dark day - complete opposite of this time last week when it was clear blue skies and sunshine and a hard frost.

1: Blue Tit

Do I get the prize for the Most feeble January 1st List? :-O

Off out tomorrow afternoon and all day Thursday so planning to make amends! ;)

A very wet and windy start to the year so didn't venture out much. Saw 32 species, best of which was probably the female long-tailed duck and 4 purple sandpiper. Doesn't look like the weather will improve much tomorrow!

you dont get a prize for the most feeble effort but you do get one for having your priorities all wrong. family coming round on new years day? you need to put a stop to that gill

Crikey, thought me and my mate were doing well with 66, clearly need a bit more practice based on others above. Best birds were Iceland, Glaucous and Med Gull, while Dipper was nice for first day of the year.

Norfolk later in the week to try and get over a 100

Cheers
Nick

Alas, I feel like a little bit of an underachiever (with only 5) compared to several of the lists above. My first birds of the New Year: Common Raven, Black-Billed Magpie, Boreal Chickadee, Black Capped Chickadee, Bohemian Waxwings

Okay I'll slip in here and make everybody feel good about whatever they saw ... I saw NONE. It SNOWED and SNOWED and SNOWED. I called over to some friends who feed them and they also saw NONE, same reason. But a call out to a friend in the country ... first birds spotted = chickadees!

We can only go upwards from this day's count!

Well I got off to a great start with my first bird, but the rest of the day I only saw 9 more species around the house. Here's what I've got.

1. Northern Saw-whet Owl
2. American Goldfinch
3. Dark-eyed Junco
4. House Finch
5. Pygmy Nuthatch
6. Black-billed Magpie
7. White-breasted Nuthatch
8. Mountain Chickadee
9. Northern Flicker
10. California Quail

Planning on doing some birding tomorrow that should put me near 50 if I'm lucky. ^_^

Am envious!

After seeing all those people with 80+ I feel a bit envious, I got to 48 yesterday but my waders were limited to just one wintering Turnstone so that made for more hard work on the other groups... Fortunately it is a good year for wintering duck.

Luckily it was bright and sunny here around Lake Geneva although cold.

Highlights were:-

Arctic Loon, Smew, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Brambling, Goldfinch, Firecrest, Red-breasted Merganser, Sparrowhawk, Greater Scaup, Ferruginous Duck, Red-crested Pochard, but I saw no House Sparrows and it was the first year in which I saw both Lesser Spotted and Green before Great Spotted Woodpecker...

Will have to go and find some Long-tailed Duck today!!!

Mike
