Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago is part of the Rio Formosa (réserve naturelle) Nature Reserve.
Apart from the Algarve's continued obsession with major golf complexes, which cover the whole area, this is still one of the best places to view and photograph [early morning is best] waders.
Unless its changed this year, parking is free out of season and well patrolled by securirty teams.
The Estuary here holds large roosts of wintering gulls, godwits, grey plover and shanks.
The golf course lagoon [ despite its obvious polution from golf course nitrates] can house little bittern, spoonbill, glossy ibis, herons, ducks grebes and of course gallinule.
It is also one of the best places for the introduced black headed weaver bird,
though I have seen this ID queried in the past.
Raptors including booted eagle , vultures , harriers and falcons can also turn up at any time here.

Hi Mick - they are definitely Black-headed Weavers that breed there in quite some numbers. Yellow-crowned Bishop can turn up occasionally and breeds occasionally in the Algarve, though not at Quinta do Lago so far s I am aware. Certainly potential though.

Booted Eagles winter - often more than 10 birds. Vultures are very rare as are any falcons except Kestrel and Peregrine - just a comment, in case anyone gets their hopes up on a visit.
