hawk closeup before release (1 Viewer)

This hawk (think 2nd year cooper's) was just tagged and about to be released at Hawk Hill, Marin Headlands, just across the golden gate from San Francisco on Sept 23. It was a rare opportunity to get to photograph the bird from only 7 feet away.

The US park ranger handling the bird is, if you were unsure from the photo, very pregnant. It was very interesting hearing how they capture the hawks, then measure, sample, and band them before release.
