I've decided to start my first-ever year list for the Brisbane area. The metropolitan area has a fantastic selection of habitats and consequently a great number of birds, so this should be a very fun challenge! Sadly I will be restricted by being a full-time student from February and having lived in Brisbane for only four months, I am still getting to know the birding sites! I don't want to set a target just yet, but one may come later this year! The area stretches from Redcliff Point in the north, south to Logan City, east to North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands and west to D'Aguilar NP. It contains many wild areas, with rainforest at D'Aguilar, dry forest at Mount Coot-tha and several other places and numerous wetlands. I can't wait to carry on exploring it!
So far I've only had a brief morning in the city, without any effort put into birding. I will be back in two days time to continue to build the list!
January 1st, Windsor
1. Tawny Frogmouth- great start to the year!
2. Australian White Ibis
3. Pied Currawong
4. Blue-faced Honeyeater
5. Welcome Swallow
6. Spotted Dove
7. Rainbow Lorikeet
8. Noisy Miner
Brisbane Airport
9. Torresian Crow
10. Feral Pigeon
11. White-throated Needletail
12. Eastern Cattle Egret
13. Masked Lapwing
Chermside
14. White-breasted Woodswallow
15. Straw-necked Ibis
16. Common Myna
Windsor
17. Magpie-lark
18. Australian Magpie
19. Pied Butcherbird
North Lakes
20. Little Black Cormorant
A slow start, but it should have increased by a lot by the end of next week!
