I think these two moths are Barred Red. The colour of one was a drab grey and the other was straw coloured.

Certainly are - occurs in all shades from green to red. I seem to recall that it's only in the UK that the red form is the commoner? (a nice bit of parochial vernacular naming on our part )

In Finland the red form is much commoner.

Ah, maybe it's a northern thing then, rather than just the British Isles?
