The weather has been much cooler than normal for the last week or so, so migration has been relatively slow. This morning I was only able to find one new species.

281. Palm Warbler

After almost a week of chilly and rainy weather, we finally had a warm, sunny day. Bird activity therefore picked up considerably. I added another five species to my Year List.

285. Red-eyed Vireo
286. Chimney Swift
287. Scarlet Tanager
288. American Redstart
289. Yellow-throated Vireo

A few warblers slowly showing up. We don't get that many. I'm still missing Chestnut Sided for the county, but not for the state.

This evening I went out to look for whip-poor-wills. As I arrived at my special spot, I flushed one from the road and saw a second singing on a metal gate.

297. Eastern Whip-poor-will

Dave, I don't even have worm eating warbler on my eBird list yet! I only have it from Missouri pre-eBird.

152. Clay-colored Sparrow Marsh Wren Community Wetlands US-NE 01 May
153. Orange-crowned Warbler Marsh Wren Community Wetlands US-NE
154. White-crowned Sparrow Branched Oak SRA US-NE 01 May
155. Rose-breasted Grosbeak Branched Oak SRA US-NE 01 May
156. American Redstart Lincoln Saline Wetlands Nature Park US-NE 01 May

158. Dickcissel Jack Sinn Memorial WMA--west US-NE 02 May
159. Black-necked Stilt Marsh Wren Community Wetlands US-NE 02 May
160. Peregrine Falcon

The pair of stilts is not an every year treat. Some hikers marched around the pond in such force they flushed my birds before good photo.

Went up to the north tip of Öland this afternoon to look for the Ortolan Buntings and Citrine Wagtails reported from there earlier in the morning. Failed to find either species, but did get one year tick:

Today I got up to 300 species for the year when I added two new birds to my Year List.

299. Dickcissel
300. Least Flycatcher

The Dickcissel was a Preston County lifer (number 241), and is only the third record for the county since 1936.

Only one new bird this morning. I probably would have had more, but car problems put an early end to birding.

190. Garden Warbler

It usually takes me a while to relearn Garden Warbler song every year due to the similarity with Blackcap, but this one stood out right away.

6 year ticks today without really trying. All on Öland.

191. Common Redpoll
192. Eurasian Reed Warbler
193. Common Whitethroat
194. Wood Sandpiper
195. Merlin
196. Temminck's Stint

Common Redpoll should have been seen in my first week back in Sweden, but for some reason they were super rare this winter. Finally got a singing male today in an unexpected spot. The Merlin was also an unexpected tick, I don't think I've ever seen on on Öland before, at least not in the spring.
