October moths 2007 (1 Viewer)

Thanks for nice pics, Angus, especially the MdJ's! W and T state "Local" down here so maybe one day ........or night!

Nerine

Harry finds them by looking at the lichen on his local oak trees but I've never yet managed to find one in daylight. You can see that they would be well camouflaged.
I caught 6 whole moths last night! Plus what I think is a mottled umber at the local railway station. brindled green (darker than some)
barred sallow (2) (new for year)
lesser yellow underwing
common marbled carpet
feathered thorn (nfy)

Last night became cold and foggy so hardly anything but Friday night was good (comparatively):
0464 Diamond-back Moth (Plutella xylostella) 1
1041 Acleris sparsana 1
1048 Garden Rose Tortrix (Acleris variegana) 2
1524 Emmelina monodactyla 1
1795x November Moth agg, (Epirrita dilutata agg.) 6
2107 Large Yellow Underwing (Noctua pronuba) 1
2240 Blair's Shoulder-knot (Lithophane leautieri) 1
2248 Brindled Green (Dryobotodes eremita) 1
2259 Dark Chestnut (Conistra ligula) 1
2267 Beaded Chestnut (Agrochola lychnidis) 2
2270 Lunar Underwing (Omphaloscelis lunosa) 1
2477 The Snout (Hypena proboscidalis) 2

The Dark Chestnut was a really convincing dark, oily, pointy-winged thing. One of those 'you know it when you see it' moments.

The last weeks cold weather here in southern Norway, with temperatures below zero and fresh snow on thursday morning, have given low activity on both moths and "moth-er". This last night temperature stayed at the warm side of zero- so I turned the trap on again. And today there was one moth in my trap, a Red Sword-grass. The weather forecast says wind from south and a bit higher temperatures, so hopefully the season is not quite over yet. Anyway, it is really nice to see the great numbers and beautiful species You guys still get. Amazing!

red-green carpet
orange sallow (nfy)
m du j
was my total catch last night.

Ken, that's a Delicate

Should have my report from last night later.

Silly me! Thanks for pointing out my error, Angus. It's not a bad record for Surrey (less than annual) and a 'tick' for me.
That's where I find W & T a bit limited.... for some of us it would be helpful if that was included in the list of similar species under orange sallow.
I couldn't help reflecting that I was feeling a little delicate this a.m. :king:

Your MdJ is much darker than mine... it seems to be quite a variable sp.
Ken

The last two nights was mild, and that gave a bit more to look at in my traps.
Nothing new- but its fun to see that there still is something flying despite of the long cold periode we have had since the beginning of september.

From the last two nights, both with two Robinson type traps with 160w MBTF light.

15/10:
Eupsilia transversa- Satellite 1
Lithophane socia- Pale pinion 1
Lithophane consocia- Softly`s shoulder-knot 2
Dasypolia templi- Brindled ochre 1
Agrochola circellaris- Brick 1
Operophtera brumata- Winter moth 5
Epirrita autumnata- Autumnal moth 8

16/10:
Poecilocampa populi- December moth 17
Agrochola circellaris- Brick 11
Epirrita autumnata- Autumnal moth 21
Eupsilia transversa- Satellite 1
Operophtera brumata- Winter moth 12
Operophtera fagata- Northern winter moth 8
Chloroclysta miata- Autumn green carpet 5
Chloroclysta siterata- Red-green carpet 2
Chloroclysta citrata- Dark marbled carpet 2
Thera obeliscata- Grey pine carpet 2
+ quite a few unidentified micros, caddisflies, and ichneumons.

Harry finds them by looking at the lichen on his local oak trees but I've never yet managed to find one in daylight. You can see that they would be well camouflaged.

Worth a walk up to my local Park then! Fingers crossed for my MdJ!

I've been in North Brittany for the last few days (no moth trap). I switched on the outside light with little success (the nights seem colder there than here) but I did get a nice Twenty-plume moth and also what I believe to be a Four-spotted Footman which I've never seen before.

The days were gloriously warm, lots of butterflies and ... Kingfishers!

Thanks Ken. Our night temperature is slowly dipping. Last night's temps were around 8 degrees and tonight's forecast is 6 deg so it'll be interesting when I next run the trap to see what is still around. I've no idea what to expect as I'm still in my first year of moth trapping - all very exciting.

Nerine

19th October trap

Well it wasn't as cold as the forecast predicted for last night. Still plenty of moths around and two new ones for me o:) I think you will agree that these are Large Wainscot and Red-line Quaker. I nearly missed this Blair's Shoulder-knot which was well camouflaged on the wooden bench by the trap. If it had settled at a slightly different angle I doubt whether I would have seen it!

Nerine
(Definitely colder today!)

You're having a good run, Nerine. We've had low temps the last few nights - ice on the car in the morning on Friday.
I'd go with red-line quaker and large wainscot. The only ones I've seen of the latter have been much larger than, say, common w.

That's a lot colder than here, Ken! Last night was around 10 degrees but the days have been cooler than of late. Last night's catch was half the number of moths than usual, the majority being Feath.Ranun. and Flame Brocs. However, yet another new one for me! I've been very lucky lately.

Here it is:

Nerine

ps. My Large Wainscot was really large too!

Nice one, Nerine!
My moths have all but given up for the moment. Even though last night cooled off rather more slowly than previous nights I only had two species:
red-green carpet
green-brindled crescent (nfy)

Micro for ID

Dear All

Not much doing here of late, I'm sorry to say..although a nice geometer came to the back kitchen window last night....and flew away immediately!! Unlike Nerin who seems to go from strength to strength. (Well done!!)

However, I did catch this character a few days ago, and unfortunately it died, and I haven't been able to track it down as a Pyralid, which is what I'm supposing it is....?

Anyone got any ideas?

Best

David
