Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (3 Viewers)

Mandarins still present New Mill floods but well hidden in partly-submerged hedge. Two Gadwall there this morning.

Swallow flying around near Knight's Grove.

6+ Yellowhammers near Mayhouse farm plus another near Harford Hill.

Two Ravens over Harford Hill.

Three Greylags over Salwarpe.

Several Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshells and Peacocks on the wing.

Little Owl in oak tree in Linacres paddocks this morning.
Willow Warbler singing near Linacre bridge still.
2 Great crested Grebes, 1 Coot, 2 Greylags, 4 Gadwall on floods near Hawford.
7 Lapwings near Hawford and one near Chatley.
1 Redpoll over near Hawford.
2 Gadwall Tapenhall.
Still a few Redwing and Fieldfare around but numbers starting to dwindle.

First walk around the Salwarpe Church/Coney Meadow area since moving here. Plenty of Chiffchaff singing and at least 3 Green Woodpeckers. Goldcrest in churchyard and 2 Nuthatches. Thought churchyard looked possible for Spotted Flycatchers later in the spring, but reading this thread seems they've disappeared from the area.

Still, early days and looking forward to developing this area, hopefully meeting Woodchat.

The Merlin was like a bolt of lightning - only about the size of a Mistle Thrush, it dipped and then climbed, spreading its tail as it did, then flew off rapidly in level flight. It's only my third record on the patch.

Just two Sand Martins roosted plus 40+ Pied Wagtails.

Singing Willow Warbler still around Linacre bridge this morning and a non-singing bird in Coney Meadow this evening.

The floods around Hawford have receded greatly but still an interesting selection of bIrds in the area - 4 Mandarins (3 drakes), 1 drake Shoveler, 12+ Gadwall, 1 Lapwing, 1 Coot and 5 Greylags. 3 Fieldfare and 5 Redwings over.

Water Rails seen along the canal at Mildenham and Linacre bridge plus calling birds in Coney reedbed.

A few Meadow Pipits flying over in several places.

Drake Tufted Duck near Chatley yesterday.

5 Yellowhammers Sinton Lane and lots of Skylarks.

Blackcap numbers increasing with singing males in many areas plus two females seen yesterday.

An interesting phyllosc near Mildenham Mill - singing most like Chiffchaff but having pale legs and Willow-like features - possibly another mixed-singing Willow Warbler.

Roe buck again near Knight's Grove this morning.

A Pipistrelle over Coney at dusk.

Male Tawny Owl calling from the Droitwich Woods end.
A Snipe flew from the reedbed.

Had to be careful not to tread on several Toads on the paths as I left - plus more croaking in the canal.

Hi Rob,

Good to have another set of eyes watching the patch.

Although Spotted Flycatchers haven't nested around Salwarpe for several years, it's usually possible to catch up with them on passage. There's a chance they will return as a breeding bird at some point - there seemed to be a good density of them around Trench Wood last year which is less than 5 miles away as the crow flies.

Three Swallows perched on wires at Ladywood, 1 at Porter's Mill, 1 at Chatley and 2 flying around Tapenhall.
Willow Warbler at Tapenhall and a pair of Gadwall.
Blackcaps in virtually every bush along the canal between Mildenham and Tapenhall.

Little Owl Linacres paddocks and 1 Redpoll over.

Now two Little Egrets at New Mill.

Four Lapwings over plus one earlier nearer to Chatley.

Lots more Swallows - back in their breeding territories - up to 5 around New Mill plus others around Knight's Grove, Mayhouse Cottages and Moat Farm.

5 Greylags over New Mill just.

Willow Warbler singing quietly in Coney Meadow earlier.

39 Sand Martins attempted to roost this evening but they were attacked by a Sparrowhawk - after which, the flock flew off high and I didn't see them come back.

1 Swallow over Coney earlier.

2 Snipe flew from the reedbed at dusk and a Tawny Owl called.

Redwings called overhead - they will be off soon - only two seen today and two Fieldfares.

Meadow Pipits over in several places today. 23 Linnets near Mayhouse Cottages and 5+ Yellowhammers in that area.

One Little Egret and a pair of Mandarin at New Mill floods - there was nothing here first thing this morning.

Pair of Gadwall at Tapenhall earlier and singing Willow Warbler still at Linacre bridge.

Little Owl at Linacres paddocks.

A few Swallows flying around but much fewer than yesterday.

Five Little Egrets at New Mill on floods - not quite a patch record but almost!

Also a pair of Mandarin still.
