Hello Cristian,
it was in Herastrau up by the railway bridge - I'm not sure if both pics are of the same bird at slightly different times? There was also an adult night heron there today which was odd - hope it was warmer than I was.

Further to tittletattler's dark-eyed Herring on 4th, here's one taken today, 13th, in W Yorks, England. Head appeared totally unstreaked as shown here. Looks like a ventral bulge there as well(?). Probably clutching at straws but I was wondering about the possibility of it being a hybrid. Does anyone reckon it's worth me having another look for it tomorrow?
Cheers.

David

could well be a hybrid but that's impossible to prove. hardly any gonys, very dark eye and it looks pretty advanced for a 3rd cycle herring gull - all cachinnans pointers. still, there's no "need" for it to have caspian blood (and certainly not a pure one...).

Looks good for a dark-eyed Herring!

2 different individuals, cris, right?
1st one is a 3rd cycle (4cy), 2nd could even be a 5cy (no black in tail, grey greater coverts, rel. large apical spots) - very nice to see the dorsal grey tongues in outer primaries!

cheers

Got carried away today and shot over 200 gull pics in Herastrau - will post just a selection here. Quality is pretty bad thanks to my dodgy resizing methods, sorry about that. And also after a long absence from these parts my gull ID is a little rusty to say the least.. so please correct my errors :-O

1/2 - think the same bird, ad. cach with pale eye?
3/4/5 - all (different) ad. cach?

1/2/3 - the same 4cy cach? This bird was the most dominant and aggressive among the 30 or so other gulls. There seemed a very definite pecking order..
4 - mixed bunch, won't bother guessing what's what.
5 - a retarded 3cy cach?! (or something...)

have 15 more to come but will wait for comments on these first, cheers!

hi james, good to hear you had a good gulling foto session.

1-2 is not fully adult but probably 5cy - note dark smudge on primary covert, solid p10 subterminal mark, small p9 mirror and strong dark bill mark.
3 is another 5cy (4th cycle) cach.
4 & 5 could even be the same male cach (or two different ones, hard to tell).
i have yet to find out what the 2cy on the same pic is, prob. a mich but i have some doubts.
fish eating prob. another adult cach.

6 a classic 3rd cycle beating up a 1st cycle (2cy)
7 very nice pic of this beautiful bird (same as 6?) in triumphing pose.
8 ...and having his meal...
9 possibly again all caspian: upper left a 3cy, left and lower right two 2cy (of i'm not entirely sure, esp. the left one) and an adult.
10 bleached male 2cy cach.

i have yet to count that immense flock on febr. 8th, cristian. how many birds have there been today out on the ice, james?

Thanks very much Lou, reminding me of important points. There was probably max. 30 around a pool of unfrozen water - but so much fighting/moving so didn't count. They were pulling out those fish and eating them alive, pretty grim sight, going to try film them today! But first some more!

11/12 - the same (have same pale spot on bill) 2cy cach?
13 - again a 2cy cach?
14 - another 2cy cach?
15 - umm?

can someone remind me the best points to separate 1st cycles of the two species please... not sure about these ones. Annoyed how much I've forgotten :-C
