Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (9 Viewers)

Below is a comparison of the dates on which Spotted Flycatcher was first recorded on the patch over the last 7 years:

12/05/12, 31/05/13, 19/05/14, 13/05/15, 12/05/16, 18/05/17, 20/05/18
 
Hi Dave , managed to track down the Spot fly at Knights Grove. Good view but very mobile. Also a cuckoo, (heard only), and a Brown Hare.

Nice one Phil - the habitat looks perfect for Spot Fly in there - lots of exposed dead branches for them to perch on. It'll be interesting to see if they hang around to breed. :t:
 
A quick scoot around the patch this morning - pretty quiet.

2 Cuckoos at Coney and one at Tapenhall (all males)
2 Lapwings still near Tapenhall
drake Gadwall on Tapenhall pool.
All the regular warblers (CWT, LWT, RW, SW, BC etc.)
Swallows, Yellowhammer, Linnets, Skylarks.
 
Spotted Flycatcher still in Knight's Grove this morning just before the heavy rain started.

5 Lapwings near Tapenhall and a drake Gadwall on the pool.
 
Cuckoos around Tapenhall - Mildenham and Hawford this morning.
Willow Warbler still singing around Linacre bridge plus it or another carrying food.
4 Lapwings between Tapenhall and Chatley.
Little Grebe again between Chatley and Hawford.
18+ House Martins around Hawford plus more around Copcut.
4 Sand Martins around Hawford plus a few Swifts.
Many more Swifts around Salwarpe, High Park and Westwood.
A few Gadwall around Hawford.
Yellowhammer near Chatley.
Lesser Whitethroats at Mildenham and Coney Meadow.
2+Juvenile Treecreepers with adult at Salwarpe.

A live Mole was showing well above ground at Coney yesterday - quite an unusual sight.
 
A Grasshopper Warbler sang a couple of times in Coney reedbed around 9:15 pm. Male Cuckoo calling and catching Drinker caterpillars. Cuckoos also at Porter's Mill - Tapenhall. Lots of Swifts and House Martins around earlier. Little Grebe and 4 Lapwings still present in same areas as yesterday.

This morning on the patch:

Little Owl in usual tree at Linacres paddocks.
Little Grebe carrying nest material on the small farm pond near Chatley.
4 Lapwings still in bare flax field and 2 Gadwall feeding there in a large puddle.
2 Cuckoos at Tapenhall- Mildenham and one at Linacre bridge.
 
2 Spotted Flycatchers in Knight's Grove this morning - performing a wing-flicking courtship display.
1 Common Tern flew over Coney Meadow and then down the valley.
Cuckoos at Coney Meadow and Tapenhall.
4 Lapwings in flax field between Tapenhall and Chatley - now not so bare.
Little Grebe still on small pool.
Yellowhammers and Linnets near Knight's Grove.
Lesser Whitethroats at Ladywood and Coney Meadow. Reed, Sedge, Common Whitethroats, Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. Swallows, House Martins and a few Swifts.
 
Knight's Grove is the large block of mature woodland that you can see from Coney Meadow looking north-west. It is easily accessed by driving through Ladywood, past the Hadley 'Bowling Green' pub and following the small Lane that is signposted 'Sinton'. Park in the double gateway and walk 100 metres into the wood and look up. Good luck.

2 + 3 Gadwall
3 Lapwings
Drake Tufted Duck
2 Greylags
Male and female Cuckoos
Singing male Willow Warbler and a female feeding young
Reed and Sedge Warblers, Whitethroats, Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Buzzards, Reed Buntings, Bullfinches, Green finches, fledgling Pied Wagtail and Long-tailed Tits.
 
Coney Meadow early morning:

Grasshopper Warbler singing
Hobby perched in tree then flew
Lots of Cuckoo activity - at least 2 males and a female.
 
A few more items from this morning:

Great Crested Grebe near Hawford Lock.
2 Common Terns along the canal between Mildenham and Hawford.
2 Cuckoos near Linacre bridge, one at Tapenhall and one near Hawford Lock.
A Hornet caught and killed an Emperor Dragonfly and started to eat it. Broad-bodied Chaser and lots of Beautiful and Banded Demoiselles.
 
Lunchtime walk down the canal to just beyond Porters Mill. 2 Cuckoos heard, one on either side of the canal. Lots of Reed Warblers. Whitethroat, Swallows and Swifts. 2 Grass Snakes seen swimming the canal.
 
A pair of Grey Partridges between Chatley and Hawford this afternoon.
A Little Owl flew across he canal near Lock Cottage, Ladywood this evening and then flew back again after being mobbed by a Blackbird.
Male and female Cuckoos at Ladywood.
The Grasshopper Warbler started singing at 9:20 this evening at Coney. 2 male Cuckoos calling and showing well.
1 Sand Martin at Hawford this morning. Several Blue-tailed Damselflies over the last few days.
