Single large gull mobbing black kite (1 Viewer)

Hi,

today I was watching one of my local pair of black kites from the balcony taking off from a perch. A single large gull (probably Larus michahellis as these are common here) came by and started attacking the kite.

I can often see a flock of crows mobbing the black kites, but this was quite different - with the crows the kites are annoyed at best and the crows keep their distance - here the single gull of equal size got very close multiple times and the kite promptly left the field.

As far as I could see the kite didn't have any prey.

Is this common?
