My son having just broken my Olympus 2100UZ has given me the opportunuty of purchasing a new ultra zoom camera( wife has given permission) It will mainly be used for wildlife and bird photography. If you were in my shoes would it be:

Panasonic FZ30 or Canon S2IS ????

Tough choice. FZ30 has better options for manual focusing and zooming but is a bit more expensive than the S2. Also, unlike the FZ30, the S2 uses standard NiMH batteries and is very economical with power.

If movie recording is important, it's hard to beat the S2.

The only other difference is 8mp for the FZ30 vs 5mp for the S2. However, both will produce good 8 x 10 images.

Both have had complaints of higher than expected noise beyond ISO 200 but this is expected for this range of camera.

For me, the choice would be between having a good manual focus option vs battery options. By a nose, I would choose the FZ30 for myself.
