Robin (1 Viewer)

Hi all,
i'm Rick from Greater Manchester.

We have recently had a Robin building in our garden shed,i am obviously staying out of the shed and leaving it to hopefully build, lay and hatch the eggs.
However, after watching it busy away with nest material, the last couple of days it has not been around |:(|.........Is this a common occurence,or could something unfortunate have happened ?

Rick

Hi Rick and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

It's hard to know what has happened to your Robin, it's possible the nest building is complete and possibly the female is preparing to lay eggs, or already has done so and is sitting on them. Keep and eye open and let us know if you have any further news.

Meanwhile I hope you enjoy your time here with us.

Welcome to BirdForum! I am sure you will find lots to interest you here, and I hope you enjoy your visits.

.... they do that to us all the time. Birds just love to make us look foolish!!!;) But you have to love them all the same.

Thanks for the update Rick.

Hi folks,
Well, after 3 days of zero activity, and the need to go in the shed.....i finally went in.
To my complete suprise, and dissapointment, there was no sign,or semblance of a nest !!!!
There was however a lot of leaves, moss etc etc in the corner of the shed......but no nest !

Could the little Robin have been storing nest material ?

I must admit,i'm flabbergasted .

Rick.

Hi Rick

How sad for you, it would have been lovely to have had a nest, wouldn't it.

Afraid I've no idea what may have been going on there I'm afraid, so it might be worth posting in the Bird Behaviour forum and see if anyone there may have some thoughts to offer up.

Robins will readily desert a nest they are building if they have been disturbed or they feel their nest site has been discovered. It sounds like your Robin was bringing in the basic materials to start a nest and then decided against the site. This needn't have been disturbance by you, a cat or a rat or a squirrel or woodpecker and possibly a host of other things such as a Sparrowhawk perching nearby, all could cause a Robin to move house. This is especially true when they haven't got a big investment in the nest. In fact I believe they build a new nest for each successive brood over the course of a season. This minimises the risk of predators working out where their nest is and avoids the build up of ticks and parasites in the nest. Better luck next time but keep a look out, the Robin may well still be in your garden.
