Vacations... Do you prefer Uganda or Malaysia(Borneo)? (1 Viewer)

I don't know what to do this summer (August). I've been in Tanzania two years ago, so Borneo could be a good place for increase my bird list; but, on the other hand, very lush, closed forests of Borneo could be a handicap for birding.

Which do you prefer: Borneo or Uganda?

Price are similar (expensive)

Thanks!

Danum Valley in Borneo is a must-visit & not just for the birds.

I never find rainforest birding to be too bad - sure you miss a few flyovers & have the frustration of being able to hear a bird & not see it, but at times the rewards are fantastic (e.g. Banded Pitta at 10 feet, a big male Orang Utan throwing sticks when I got too close, encountering a herd of pygmy elephants on the road, etc. etc.)

Having said that, I've heard Uganda is pretty good too...

Glimmer........that's a tuff choice! Have been to both locations and really....wotever destination you decide upon...you won't be disappointed! How can you choose between the prospect of seeing orangutan in Borneo or Gorilla and Chimp in Uganda?! Of course maybe you're main 'thing' is just to see as many birds as possible? As you have been to Tanzania and have experienced the 'wildlife'...other than just birds....perhaps Borneo wud be for you. Be prepared for 100% humidity at Danum tho...unbelievable place and still one of my favourite 'holidays'...[if you can call birdin trips 'holidays']! Failed to see Giant Pitta but did see Bristlehead! If you luv hunting for Pitta's you simply must go.
Kinabalu is awesome....hey...now that i think about it....go to Borneo!...[unless you wanna see Shoebill]!........i wud return there at the drop of a hat....! Respects......

Thank you all.

Danum valley sounds great... but... I've been in Costa Rica too and I can imagine that kind of "jungle", 100% humidity, hot, a lot of insects (fantastic!), reptiles, noctural trips... and you can hear a lot of birds, but just impossible to see them (i. e. Monteverde the bellbird, the most amazing bird I've heard, but not seen). My best observations were in open, wetlands, lowlands...

So... Is Uganda more "open"? Shoebill.... uff!

Glimmer......yeah.....i suppose you could say Uganda is more 'open'......as you know...African stuff can often be more 'obvious'....[compared to Asia]..although there's many exceptions that you have to work bloody hard for! Shoebill is juz one of 'those' birds you just gotta see eh?......we had a pair of these awesome birds 'displaying' [if you can call it that]....up round Murchison....[where we also had porn views of Leopard]!! Would advice a 'guide' if you go to Uganda......don't need one in Borneo tho.....well we didn't some years ago.

ps......yes it is very hot in Costa Rica...but Danum humidity seemed ridiculous..[you do get used to being drippin wet all the time tho].....missed Bellbird eh?.....all that 'birders neck ache' for nowt......condolences!! Hope you 'get sorted'......have a great trip...wherever you go!

Been to Danum twice. Once wet - once dry. Great both ways. During the dry trip - just shorts and sandals. No leeches. During the wet trip ---- best insects I've ever seen. I'll send a few (Photo / Emails) of the incredible insects if you PM me your Email address. Also, I've never been anywhere with better mammals - day and night. Oh, and all the frogs, glowing fungi, etc etc............

I also have to say that I've been to hotter and sweatier places. Danum has this beautiful (gibbon song filled) mist in the morning. Great sleeping temp at night.

Haven't been to Africa yet. Sounds great. Malay Borneo is just fantastic though. Great Highlands at Kinabalu and then there's Sarawak, Kuching, etc.
