It's a Grey Dagger - a nice one to see because adult Grey and Dark Dagger moths can't be separated without examining them, but the caterpillars look different so allow easy ID.

Thanks James that's great, nice bit of info. Luckily I spotted it just before washing my car, it had taken refuge on my offside rear tire and narrowly avoided a thorough drenching.

The ability to identify caterpillars equates to magic, in my view. Where does one start? I got lucky ID'ing a Drinker moth caterpillar relatively quickly (just under half an hour) back in June, but I've got several others in my photo collection where I just don't know how to begin. Any advice, please?
