On The Hoof - Fieldwork From Orkney (1 Viewer)

I gettin mental pictures, that I know I shouldnt......billl / rump related. Anyhow, the view is great and the observations top notch as always....

wow wow, how do you draw like that:eek!:

so are you staying put for life now on Orkney? can wait to see what you create out there

this is one of the best pieces ever, so simply done, yet it has everything - a pencil, some watercolour, put them together - hey presto.

Tis indeed special, pure observation put down in the field is hard to beat, as a behavioural study this really is top class, a unique little watercolour..

Love the shapes in the postures of the preening OC -- phenomenally well captured, as always!

Rooks always look so cartoonishly phony to me -- perhaps because I associate them so strongly with childrens storybooks. I expect that if I ever see one he'll be walking around with a cob pipe.

Thought I'd better sign-in before the search party is sent out . . . just back from a visit to Yorkshire to see dear old Ma and for once managed to get some drawing time shoe-horned in. I'll apologise for the splatter of stuff, but it's amazing how exciting it can be when faced with unusual subjects such as whitethroats . . . . .
The oystercatcher scribbles are from home - the garden, that is.
Some of the canadas and duck pages are from a very enjoyable hour or so with our very own Russ B (good to see you again Russ - 25 years on!!) and some other duck, geese and lrp pages are from Old Moor Wetland Centre (I did the initial inerpretation scheme and visitor centre graphics when the site was initiated about 16 years ago - time flies, eh?).

a quick look over these pages, I feel as though I've just had a very pleasant day's birding. Big thumbs up for the whitethroats and the reed bunting.

well

It's been too long since I checked in here, Tim. Wonderful sketches in the latest group - hard to pick a favorite. Looking at the images of your property, two things come to mind. First, I can see where a shelterbelt (they're called windbreaks in the western US) would make a great migrant trap - not many tree options around there from the look of things. Second, your idea of a 'little' pond might need some calibration - looks pretty good-sized (big, by my standards) for another stopover point that might become well-used by some waterfowl over the years as well.

What a treat Tim! I feel like I could, and more importantly probably should, look at sketches like these all day long. They're all clean, fresh, direct, all you can expect of drawing.

Glad you and RussB were able to get out and do some sketching together.

Well worth the wait (which has been unusually long from you). Always inspiring me to get the pad out, thank you.

Mike

Aye, it was good to see you, Tim, and a thorougly enjoyable and inspiring time it was, too. Let's make sure it's not another 20+ years!
Having seen some of these 'in the flesh' so to speak, they seem to have even more impact here, as it was a privilege to watch the hand that crafted them. Right, I'm off out on this fine evening!

Russ

Just back from a four-day stay on the isle of Swona - more on the blog later . . . .
